Recently Got A new tank just to keep one oscar in, lest it running and set up for 2 weeks before putting him in, did a full test before and everything was ok.

Put him in, and all he does is sit on the gravel in the corver of the tank, he looks healthy, i havnt seen him eat even though i have offerd many diferant types of food to try and get him too, but nothing.

Ive read that they are aggressive eaters, and a mobile fish. Is that just from the wild? because this ones is small, (2 inches) and has obviosuly only ever been kept in over crowded pet shop tanks. Has that affected him or something?

What do you guys think? any help would be great. Cheers

If you just brought him home from the pet shop, he is probably just shy because he is in a new place. Many fish will by shy when they first get home, but once they get accustomed to the tank they become more active and outgoing. If he's the only fish in the new tank though, he will probably perk up soon. I'm not sure if there is something oscar specific about this behavior, but that's what i've noticed of new fish in general!

Could be stress, could also be water perameters, what did you test for and what were the results? Whats the temps, ph ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings, and what are you feeding him? Also what is the tank setup, bare , planted, wood or rock decor etc? Do you interact with him at all, and if so how?

How new is he? If its only been a day or two don't stress it. How ever.. if it's been a while you should check your water condition and give us some more info if you can.

Hope he gets better!

You put a young fish in solitary confinement whose entire short life was spent with lots of siblings and later plenty of other fish in the pet shop tank. Give the poor little bugger some time to adjust to this fearful situation and provide good food. It is also a good idea to check what they fed in the store, how long the fish was there and what the water parameters there are. Some shops have their own water system. Do you have some decoration in the tank or is it bare? Oscars like to play ...

What size tank is he in? Oscars are very messy, grow quite large and need BIG tanks.

ive got some bogwood, and rocks in there. There in a 3 foot at the moment but am expanding to a larger soon. Ive been feeding them differnt types of foods, special cichlid flakes, bloodworm & sinking pellets.

Someone mentioned do i interact with them? what do you mean exactly? i sit watching them alot but thats about it.

They have perked up in the last few days, they eat quite vilolently. which is always fun to watch, and there swimming around alot more so i think it was just shyness or the stess of the move
