I found this paper recently which covers the tracking of the evolution of African Cichlids. It makes fascinating reading, not least because it mentions that Lake Victoria is of very recent vintage - it's just 12,500 years old - and in that short time, Lake Victoria has acquired over 350 species from one, or possibly a small number, of common ancestors (the hypothesis is that there is just one, and that it's likely to be a Haplochromis burtoni type fish).

It's somewhat heavy going, but for those who like this sort of thing, it has gene sequences listed for various Cichlids.

Enjoy everyone

That's one heck of an interesting read Calilasseia, thanks for the link.

We've been saying for years that lots of species are so similar in appearance that they've got to inbreed with each other somewhere along the line for the colour varients to occur, for example:
Tropheus, Aulonocara & Pundamillia - just 1 species type from each lake that have such similar markings and colourations to start many arguments
