My bolivian rams finally laid some eggs last week.. this is about their 5th attempt. When i got home from work on friday they had hatched and the parents were guarding them. I managed to suck quite a few up with a turkey baster (i know prob not the best thing but its the only thing i could think of!) and i now have them in a breeder net in the tank. Ive been feeding them liquid fry food.

Any tips/hints/comments on anything i should be doing at this point?

ive bred other fish before just not these and i really want to give them the best possibility of survival!

thanks!

Congrats on the ram fry!

I may want to do that someday myself. I have this
link about raising German Blue Rams, but I would think it would be the same for Bolivians. Good luck! I'm curious how this ends up. Please keep us posted.

Congratulations. Keep us posted, with pics when you're able.

When my juvenile kribs were fry, I set up a brine shrimp hatchery to feed them the napauli (spelling ????) You can also buy bags of napauli (baby brine shrimp) from Auburn. Most LFS sell the adult brine shrimp, but Auburn have the napauli, which is just the right size for your fry and has lots of goodies packed in. Drain them first to get rid of the salt water (I used a brand new hanky as a sieve). Put the drained napauli into a small container with some tank water and use your turkey baster or medicine eye dropper to target feed the fry. I fed mine 3 - 4 small feeds a day while they grew.

I left mine with the parents, but they had no other fish with them.

Have fun.

Cheers

My fry have now lost their yolk sacs and are swimming around..they are so cute!

i have still been feeding them the fry food but i think i will set up my brine shrimp hatchery bottle and try to hatch some.. im thinking it may be easier just to go and buy from auburn (thanks for that TW!)
ill keep you up dated.. im thinking of maybe setting up another tank to put them in once its cycled. I have a sponge filter already so i can just run that in there...

would i need anything else?

Congrats again.

Grow-out/fry tanks need frequent water changes due to the fry being fed more often.

Hikari First Bites are another good fry food, and not as messy as liquid. I also use hard-boiled egg yolk. A little goes a long way and I normally save it for just before a water change because it is quite messy.

I also make a mix of regular flake, spirulina, shrimp pellets, and freeze dried bloodworms. Crush into a fine powder, store in a jar or plastic container.

With the napauli at Auburn, best to ring first, as they have hatching days - then they sell out & you have to wait for the next hatching day.

Another option is you can get frozen napauli - not everywhere, but it is around. I think the brand is Pos Aqua or something similar (if interested, I'll check my freezer pack tonight for correct name). I got mine from a LFS in Hurstville.

Keep us posted.

They are so far doing fine. I havent managed to get my brine shrimp hatching bottle out as yet but will try and do that tonight. Hope they still hatch in this cold weather though!
So ive still been feeding them liquid food! il try and take some snaps tonite though i dont really know if you will see anything..
you can see their 2 eyes and they have developed more of a body shape so they are growing well!
Must also clear the desk and start the other tank up for them.

My brine shrimp hatcher sits inside the tank, so it keeps same temp as the tank.

Glad they are doing well.

Cheers
