I came across this article and gave it a try. Got all the chemicals from the store I used to buy chemicals for my chemistry lab practicle exercises pretty cheap and works great.........spend some time and effort once and you'll be free from worrying about pH in your malawi tank.
Sodium bicarbonate buffers the pH really well between 8.1~8.2. And the other carbonates keep the hardness good.

hope it helps...

I only buffer in one of my Tang tanks, using this recipe. In the other tanks the shells and/or crushed coral substrate do the work, which I like better than messing around with chemistry.

almost the same thing with simpler common names (instead of chemical formulae)
regarding crushed coral, i've read somewhere that as it has sharp edges, its not good to be used as subsctrate for diggers...its better to put it in a chamber in the filter...im not using a canister filter, so it wont be practical for me. Moreover, only one store in my area sells coral sand and its soooo expensive that i wud still go with the chemicals

please correct me if im wrong somewhere...thanks
