Can shellies be done in a 10 gallon tank? I have an extra one, with an eclipse hood on it (which is a good thing!) Has anyone have experience with this size with these fish? Thanks

I breed brevis in a 5.5g, have brevis fry in a 10g, and have 2 10g tanks of multi colonies.

A 10g is fine for multies or if you can find a proven pair of another species.

One proven pair of a species such as brevis, occies, stapps, etc.

You can start a multi colony with 6 fish.

I have six tanks that I keep and breed shellies in...I'm just curious, what kind of answer are you looking for?

Which shellies are you talking about? As some you can only keep a pair in a 10 gal, as they will fight over territories, while other species will get along very well in colonies, and yet others you can only have one male but have several females for him. And yet some other species get too large.

For specific answers you need to ask more questions and give a little more info on what you are wanting to know exactly.

Theresa is probably the best person on this site IMO to get info from about shellies. If you won't take her info, what are you looking for?

Check out http://www.shelldwellers.com for info on setting up the tank and what you will need.

HERE is their article on the basics.

I just want more specifics..as in what ones can i find the easiest, rather what are more common, i dont want none of those impossible to find ones... im guessing its the Brevis ones that are most commonly kept. Cna it be done in a 10 gallon and if so, HOW many, what should the dress of the tank design be, i basically asked for experience....thats all! not so much harder than that!

Multies are rather easy. You can start with 5-6 in a 10g. Very minimal substrate, lots of shells.

With brevis you could either get a proven pair, or buy a small group of juveniles. After you end up with a pair though you'd have to remove the others. Sand substrate, approximately 2-3 shells per fish.

Hard water and high pH are necessary. That's about it.
