The people told us at the fish store that he would be ok with oour fish. The other night he ate one, should I get rid of this eel?

no thats a really cool type of eel wat other fish are in the tank with him and can u give the size of eel and the other fishes.

That's up to you. If you have any other fish similar in size to the cichlid that you want to keep, you should return the eel to the LFS.
