Thats a difficult mix, african cichlids and angels often have disease transmission issues, and while angels are big , they are fairly pathetic fighters even when confronted with a smallish african cichlid. Water hardness can be at the opposite ends of the scale too.
Maybe try small apistos or the more benevolent of the south american small species of cichlid. they appreciate the same planted , slightly acid aquaria that the angels do. Keep it "locality type specific" if you can.Not saying other approaches wont work, but it will be easier to choose species from similar if not identical water qualities. Theres a lot of cichlids to choose from where angels live. It will save a lot of hassle in the long run.

In a tank that size you could have an eartheater (which personally i find fascinating and beautiful) , small acaras (like sheepsheads that arent too agressive), then theres a staggering selection of catfish you can keep with angels, larger tetras, in a 120, you have a myriad of possibilities.

If you fancied going all amazonian, the this is a nice site to take a look at, it has loads of type locality species listing.http://www.amazonian-fish.co.uk/

No. I would not attempt this.

Choose one or the other:

1) african setup (which requires extensive research, planning and patience)

OR

2) go with angels. Also need research and planning. Don't put 'em with neons.

You have a 120 gallon aquarium awaiting more Angels?

Have you ANY idea how utterly STUNNING a dozen Angelfish would look in that tank? Especially as it's big enough for you to plant it with something spectacular such as Echinodorus grandiflorus for the Angels to swim beside? With that space, you would end up with a dozen HUGE Angelfishes that would be show stoppers!

Let me give you an idea of what to expect - I had a breeding pair of Angels when I was a teenager. The male was magnificent (and how I bitterly regret not having a camera to photograph him back then!) - he must have been a good NINE INCHES TALL. Now, take a look at the little juvenile Angels in the store, then picture what a dozen of those would look like if they got to be nine inches tall. In YOUR aquarium. Probably breeding at a prodigious rate too because they'll have the space.

Carefully chosen bogwood pieces, a stand of Giant Vallisneria somewhere, a big Echinodorus grandiflorus as your centrepiece plant (plant it slightly off centre for best effect) and a group of medium sized Swordplants acting as the corps de ballet to your grandiflorus prima ballerina, so to speak, then let a dozen Angels grow in there to be BIG. You KNOW you want to do it!

I've seen what a big shoal of Angels looks like when they have space and can grow properly. Chester Zoo (about 10 miles from my home) had some corkers a few years back. They had about 20 in a 150 (I think) - I know it was a big tank, but didn't catch the exact size - and it was planted with multiple Swordplant species. This was EVERY Angelfish keeper's dream Amazon tank.

Do it. It'll take about four years to come to fruition, but once it does, you'll buy me a large drink to thank me for giving you the idea if ever you meet me.
