I currently have my jack dempsey in with a flower horn and a firemouth in a 55g. and I already know I am going to have to move somebody out. But I was wondering what the smallest best size tank for a Jack would be? i was thinking about putting my jack and possibly the firemouth into a 40g. or if i have to. i'll find a new home for the firemouth.

The Demspey and the Flowerhorn will probably end up wanting a 75 gallon setup EACH to themnselves. Which leaves your Firemouth all on its own in the 40 waiting for you to provide it with a boy/girlfriend.

Want to know how demanding these things can be space wise? Ask Hokese. He has a Dempsey and a Flowerhorn, and he'll tell you they don't take prisoners when they start demanding space. The Flowerhorn in particular is likely to turn into a total berserker once the full flush of sexual maturity kicks in, and the Dempsey won't be that far behind.

Remember an adult male Demspey can reach 10 inches given adequate housing. The Flowerhorn might, depending upon parentage, end up as a 12 inch fish. Big, muscular, strongly territorial fishes that are more than willing to exterminate competitors for real estate if they feel crowded place BIG demands on you, the aquarist, to supply the space they want. Hokese's fishes can cut up rough with each other in 200 gallons - that gives you an idea what kind of fun and games you're looking at.

Hi there,
I would suggest 55g for the Dempsey alone,
75-100 gallons for the flowerhorn (which do reach
16-18 inches), and the firemouth could go in a smaller
tank - 25g long - 33g would be sufficient.

also, watch that flowerhorn closely, even thoo he has been living with ya jd with no problems, they are well know for being mixed without problems, then like over night there temper just explodes, and if you dont get the jd out in time, even if your flowerhorn was still small,he would glady take out a jd without thinking twice, these fishes temper is just on another level, and this is likely to happen in that size tank, just keep a eye out for possilbe warning signs
