I'm interested in getting a tankmate for my O and sev; they're each ~7" long.

I'd like to avoid a female sev in case they'd breed; would 2 males cause a problem?

Other ideas I have: JD, salvini, chocolate.

Any input and/or suggestions would be appreciated. The tank is very peaceful and I'd like to keep it that way.

Only way to *guarantee* it stays peaceful is to refrain from adding.

Sorry if that sounds mean but
m/f mix = aggression due to breeding
m/m mix = aggression due to territory issues

I am a bit of a set and forget aquarist. (once my community is going swimmingly I am loathe to shift the mix)

I am a conservative 'fraidy

That said I am not experienced with those breeds so may soon stand corrected.

Can other forumites pse jump in......

I think I would go with the salvini as they tend to be a fairly peaceful species as far as cichlids go, however as with all cichlids there is the potential for aggression.

from what I have heard Salvani's can be as aggresive as any cihlid around. A JD would probably work and a choclate would definitely work. What size tank is this though Theresa? Also I think 2 male Sev's would probably work if you wanted to do that.

If there is sufficient space for another Cichlid, you could always try a Jade Eye Cichlid. Whether you can FIND one is, of course, another matter entirely.

Jade Eyes are usually of a fairly mellow disposition. Whether the new introduction would be compatible with your existing Cichlids is, of course, moot. But if you're looking for a Cichlid species with a reputation for NOT bringing aggression baggage with it into an aquarium, then a Jade Eye is a pretty good choice. Your problem from that point on is whether or not the existing inmates would beat it up, and that I obviously can't answer.

If you want to avoid warfare breaking out in your tank, then one fish I would DEFIINITELY steer clear of as an addition is Nandopsis tetracanthus, the Cuban Cichlid (sometimes called the Poor Man's Jaguar because it's similar in appearance). This is a fish that can sit ticking like a time bomb in an aquarium for months, seemingly happy to live with its tankmates, then for no apparent reason goes into berserker mode and starts World War III in your aquarium. It also destroys plants on sight, likes to rearrange your decor (heaters and filter tubes need protecting against its gratuitous vandalism) and can dig gravel on an industrial scale when it feels inclined. Of course, whether anyone is offering one for sale where you are is moot, but just in case, and you think "Oh that looks like an interesting fish", I'd give it a wide berth until you're ready to take on a truly ornery fish.

i rekon just go the chocolate cichlidive had all the others that were mentioned above and they can get nasty, even if you got another male severum, your big fella would pick on the new male severum, and the salvini,jd,they are ok while they are small, now that my salvini is getting big,he is starting to get a bit too aggresiveand same with the jd,ive had to put my 2 jacks into there own tank, even when they wernt spawning my male was that bad he was intolerent of tankmates in a 200gal(now thats nasty),once again i rekon the chocky would make a great addition to your tank, also they get to a good size and when i had my chocky,he was execellent with my oscars and my severum....jack and salvini are beautiful fish, but if you do get 1 of these terrors just be prepared incase some aggression does break out, have a spare tank ready to go,or a divider.but good luck and please let us know what u decide on...also it depends on the fish, just because we all say theyare nasty dosent mean that u will get a nasty 1,gts have a wicked reputation for being nasty fishes, but my gt is fine he never shows any aggression....
