Are two Yellow Labs OK in a 29g? Since I would be only buying two, it will not be possible to ensure a male/female pair.

I think it would be better to do a group of dwarf Mbuna rather then Labs. Go with either saluosis or Demanosis. That way you can have a decent sized group

I kept 5 small yellow labs in a 29 gallon once. I would say that as they get older they will require some more space but this may work well for you if you plan a bigger tank for the future. This way your labs can put on some size before you add aggresive tanks mates when you get your bigger tank.

Yellow labs do better in colonies, as do the majority of mbuna. You might want to look into a pair of leleupi,or calvus, compressiceps, julies, etc instead.
