hey guys,my flowerhorn and my convict/festae are in need of a tank upgrade, but there is no more room left in my house,so i was thinking now that it is coming into summer where i live,do you think a tank with these 2 fish in it will be ok,this wont be permanent,it would only be for the summer,or untill we find a bigger place,we are already looking.the pergola is closed in with half colourbond fencing and half green shadecloth,so that would keep away cats or anything like that, what do you guys rekon?

That depends on exactly where you live. It would be impossible in Melbourne but OK in Darwin of Far North Queensland. Even then there could easily be a great temperature changes day and night. Also the exact location east or west side of house.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

If it is facing west (pm sun)) that is where it will be the hottest side of the house.

I am saying no reason being on the west side it will become very hot especially during your very hot humid days. Then you will get the sudden temp drop over night.

Your heater would keep it under control during the cooler nights but during the afternoons is where I see the problems.

To put it this way I would not do it at all.

well the only other option would be the pergola out the front, its the same as the 1 out the back, but its out the front, and this doesnt get the sun, this is the 1 we sit in summer as its nice and cool, even thoo you said no to the back pergola, what about the front 1?this mite seem a bit rushed ,but as i said,id like to get em in the bigger tank, while we find a bigger place.if i could put a time limit on finding a bigger place i would just leave em untill we did move, but how do you put i time limit on that?

That sounds a bit better. Can you get hold of a Minimum - Maximum thermometer this will give you a better idea of the exact temps when you are not at home or during the night when it will be the coldest.

This might sound silly but it tells you what the maximum temperature was when the temp drops there is till an indication of the highest temp. It works the reverse for coldest temp. There is a button to press once you have the reading and it is ready for the next reading.

They can be bought at gardening centres or Burnings in the gardening dept.

Hokese,
Wont it be a bit hot in the middle of the day to have a tank set up outside?
Especially once December starts, when the daily max is often above 30.
Maybe set up some fans to coll the pergola

That is the reason why I suggested he looks at buying a min / max thermometer.

Have you found one yet?

too cold at the moment, you'd need to heat and you'd need evaporative cooling or similar over Dec/Jan as the temps do shoot up. Tank should be 4' or bigger to give you enough water volume to reduce the temperature swings, and it should be insulated on at least 4 sides.

I have a few outside, but only with cray and feeders. It'd be no good over winter, but heating an outdoor tank over summer should be pretty OK.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

well its just about done,i dont mess around as soon as i got the answer from keith,i got my neigbour and we got it all leveled out,and its filling as i write this, this part of our house even in the midst of summer it very rarelly hits 30,or above,as it has the bradford bats in the lower half of the pergola wall, and in the ceiling, its constantly shady and cooler, and we dont have the clear panels to let light in,thats why we spend alot of time in there, plus ill be able to keep a eye on things, and the tank is 150 gal,so that should be a big enuff body of water to stop any major temp swings, and when i drop my daughter back home this afternoon, ill take a trip up to bunnings to get the temp device keith hooked me onto.where ive placed the tank, its against the brick wall on 2 sides, the back and the left side are up against the wall,so i rekon it will be ok,ive still got to wait for the water to cycle and get my parameters correct, but when i do ill let yous no how the fish are doing,i cant wait to get em in there

i have a 6 footer outside and my GT's have been fine for 2 years, and i recently got jacks and they are thriving. I actually think the varying temperature does them some good, good luck btw

Cheers
