I saw some Yellow Labs at the LFS, and nearly pulled the trigger on two small ones, but I remember reading that they need some specific water parameters to do really well.

I have the high pH and hardness pretty well covered with what come out of my tap. But, do I need to add some sort of mineral supplement or "cichlid salts" type stuff?

And, how well would the yellow labs really do in a community setting with a few tiger barbs, rainbows, rummies and wcmms?

The other thought I have is to just wait until this summer when I set up my 55g. For that tank, I had been thinking of some Bolivian Rams in a community setting. Perhaps the Yellows would do better in a bigger tank with that new set up?

What do you cichlid experts have to say about all this??

They would probably work in a community tank. They do alot better in a species tank with other african cichlids. I have one right now in my community tank and she is doing really good. She is still pretty small though, and Im going to be converting one of my tanks into a yellow lab species tank.

African cichlids should only be kept in an african cichlid community. You'll need to look into which ones are compatible with yellow labs. Maybe no probs now, but other types of fish generally get wiped in short order, if not sooner then later. A syno cat or pleco should be ok though.
