i was told to get some spirulina to increase the color of my african cichlids.today i went to the fish store and being the forgetful person that i am,i got the "Hikari" brand daphnia instead (i meant to get the spirulina).since i already bought it,would the cichlids eat the daphnia or should i return it for another hikari product??

Hikari makes:
daphnia
tubifex worms
blood worms
brine shrimp
krill

of those, which one would be best for my cichlid??

Daphnia aren't the most nutritious foodstuff but they should eat it readily.

if it's not open, you're better off returning it. they'll eat it, but there are better things to feed them.

spirulina comes in flakes or pellets. there are a number of hikari brand cichlid pellets. look for the wheat germ & spirulina formula. they sell various sized pellets in bags.

what kind of africans are they? if you have mbuna none of the foods listed in your post above are good as they are herbivores and the high protein from those foods will cause bloat. stick with the spirulina pellets.

today i got some nutrafin spirulina sticks, but the food bits just soak up water then float to the top and my cichlids never get a chance to eat it.plus they are somewhate too big for my cichlids to eat.......oh well, i'll just have to wait till they're older

I feed all my tanks with hakari tropical flakes (along with lots of other foods.) The flakes have spirulina in them, and so will many other flakes foods. All the fish I have loooove the flakes.

i asked the person at the lfs, and she said that the sticks would be better because it would be "less messy" since flakes tend to cloud water easier.the sticks that i got just float at the top.they aren't really clouding the water but my fish arent eating them anyways.i dont really feel like spending another 12 dollars on spirulina flakes when i already have regular flakes and spirulina sticks.

guess i shoulda got the flakes

i suggest next time you go to the store to take a list with you. it is never bad to have multiple types of foods for your fish but the foods containig protein should not be feed to your mbuna's often because they cannot digest them well. If too much protein is eaten they can get what is called "bloat", which basically clogs their digestive track and they blow up like a balloon. for now i would try crushing the sticks and see if that works and pay more attention next time.
