What size pond would be best for someone starting out & what fish could I put in it?

mum said that we would only get a 120g at the VERY MOST, so what should I put in it?

I dunno if I should make a post at the Livebearer section but anyway, at about 3 out of 5 lfs's ive been to there are tanks labelled "cold water liveberers", "cold water mollies" etc, could I keep some of those in a pond? I live in Sydney & the pond won't freeze over.

I'd also like "the bacics" of what I need to do in order to have a pond.

Thanx in advance

Paradisefish are becoming common pondfish in sydney.

There are also a good selection of natives that would be suitable... Firetail gudgeons maybe?

Anyone know about the cw mollies etc?

Calla if you had a 120g pond what would you put in it?

What maintanence is needed to keep a pond of that size? Im thinking,

4 Dojo loaches
6 cw platies?
6 wcmm
4 cw mollies?
5 male cw guppies?
____? fry?
4 paradise fish?
& what else?
1 or 2 Bristlenose Pleco?

& could I put java moss in to help fry servive?

coldwater guppies, mollies and platies aren't really going to be suitable for a frosty pond. They are just on the cooler range of temperate, they aren't really cold cold water.

What area of sydney are we talking?

Have ever gotten up at 5 or 6 and had the grass go crunch, or had to hose off the ice on the windshield, or puffed out steam for half the morning?

yeah, it gets cold.

Less so right smack on the coast, but still too frosty for most fishies.

120G is enough for goldies... and they do look good veiwed from above.

That is going to be something you will need to consider if you are going to want the fish to be a feature. Something that is laterally compressed (discus shaped) is not going to look so great from above.

if you could find a small heater ie 100odd watts just to make sure the temps dont get too cold you could have fancy goldies ie red caps black moores and calico faintails.

how about
2 black moores
2 calico fantails
2 red caps

or you could try and you wouldnt need a heater
2 shrubkin
1 turtle

2 black moores or 2 fantails
6 wcmm
4 dojo loaches
Any other suggestions?

If I got the heater would I be able to have cw livebearers?

--------
Thank you, do you think this stocklist is good?,

6 wcmm's (white cloud mountain minnows)
2 fantail goldfish
2 black moors
4 dojo loaches
2 paradise fish

--------------------

How much money will a good setup cost these days (prices may differ as I live in Sydney Aus) im guessing,

$300 for base pond
$80 for filter
$100 for plants & gravel
$100 for fish
$20 for all those little things

I *think* thats all ... only $600

anyway, is there anything you think I missed out?

Could I use the filter as the *water feacher* & have it slightly out of the water, like a small waterfall?

thanx

ps,(sorry bout' my spelling)
