my friend has a 150 gallon pond, you no one of those plastic ones that go in the garden.
he has had his goldfish and koi for about 2 weeks then he changed the water and the ALL died was this because of cold New England hose water or the chlorine?or something else?

P.S.could you put koi or goldfish or other fish in a dug trout pond,or does it have to be one of those plastic garden pond this as we are having a trout pond dug in the back yARD

the fish could have died for a number of reasons.

yes clorine, he should have conditioned to water first or leave it so stand for day or so.

the temperature change if large would have stressed the fish resulting in disease and death.

could of had a ammonia spike, as the chlorine would have killed the bacteria.

a 150 gallon pond is too small for koi, a single koi needs that much room to it's self. in pond that small i'd have about 4-5 goldfish, thats with filtation!!

could you put koi or goldfish or other fish in a dug trout pond

What do you mean by trout pond? is it just a dug out hole with water and trout in??
goldfish can live in ponds with less filtration if not over stocked, but koi need really good filtration systems.

If want a goldfish/koi pond i'd build a different one if you have room, it willl be easier to care for them

sry i made a mistake the pond he has is 350 gallons, and he does have a filter.
by a trout pond i mean dig a pond in the back yard with a spring and let it fill up and put goldfish in it.as someone else has a big spring pond that was dug a year ago fo trout that we fish in.

as long as the fish can't get into any natural water way or the water from the pond doesn't then it would be fine for goldfish.

350gallons is still small for koi's.
have around 5-10 goldies in it.

350 gallons is really too small for koi, you should have at least 1,000 gallons I think. Maybe try some fish that don't need as much room.

PreFormed Ponds are not intended for Koi...they are rather small and usually do not exceed 2ft in depth....Goldfish are about all you can have in these plastic ponds....Koi need atleast 3 ft depth and even more depending on the part of country....did he change out all the water at once, or a large water amount?? If he did the fish were all probably gasping for air all in one spot after the change and the oxygen level didnt build up fast enough for them......Along with not using a Conditioner for Chlorine/Chloramine....(but this would have taken a large amount of water change to kill them instantly)....giving the right layout for the pond, Koi will survive cold water winters just fine...
