No matter what kind of filtration you have, a black moor goldfish will not work out in a ten gallon tank. They grow to five inches or so, and put out huge amounts of waste. I would recommend nothing short of a twenty-nine gallon tank to house one of these, simply because they are waste machines.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

All goldfish grow much too large for a 10 gallon. If you want a goldfish...it's, i think at least a 55 gallon aquarium minimum, and thats for the smallest type of goldfish (black moore and fancy's) May i suggest keeping a school of tetras? Or maybe a school of another small fish?

If you wanted something that lives in coldwater, zebra danios or white cloud minnows would be just dandy!

White Cloud Mountain Minnows .

I have 2 - 3.5 inch fancy goldfish in a 36 gallon bow front and they are growing fast. I can safely say that the 36 gallon bowfront, which was only suppose to be temporary, is requiring me to make twice weekly water changes to keep water quality in line. So, I agree with the above that no goldfish should be kept in a 10 gallon.

Have you kept fish before or is this your first experience? Its great that you are asking before you act. At least, I hope you haven't bought one yet Let's talk some more.

How can you not like a face like this WCMM:

I have a 36 gallon bowfront with two, 3.5 inch fancy goldfish in it. They've been there for 1 year and 3 months. It ain't big enough. It is temporary and I can tell you that 30% water changes weekly is not enough to keep nitrates below 40ppm. I have to do them twice weekly. It's much work unless you have them in a very large tank like a 55 for two or a 90, 125 if you want several. They grow fast.

This should give you an idea:

Can we interest you in some White Cloud Mountain Minnows (WCMM)? They would be great in a 10 gallon - 6 of them with 6 pygmy cories. A small heater would keep the temp from swingining and allow you to compromise at 75 for the two sets of fish.

Is this your first fishkeeping experience with a tank or have you had others? It's great you are asking before acting .

How can you resist this:

When people talk about a x gallong tank I get confused. How many feet is that? 1.5ft or 2ft standard?

How big are we talking here?

- my 20 long is a 30 inch long tank that is 12 inches wide and 12 inches high. Lots of surface area compared to a regular 20 which is, I think, 24 inches long and taller by a few inches.

A 10 gallon US is 38.75 Litres.

Here's a reference chart that will cover more. Use our Interactive-Calculators to convert to litres.

When someone posts in litres I have to convert it to US gallons or I think it is a big tank, when it is actually small

I vote with Cory-Di...White Clouds are very hardy, school nicely, are quite pretty in their own way. Avoid temptation to overstock. 10g tanks can be hard to maintain good water quality. Or a couple of female bettas, or one spectacular male betta.

[font color="#000080"]I breed black moores.... let me tell ya, my tank is a 90 gallon. It's big! My fish are 9 inches and growing. :%) Please, do not put a black moore in a 10 gallon. It may live for a while, but like everybody said here, it's not a good idea: you will stunt it's growth, mess with their spine, poison it because of the large bio-load, and eventually it will die a premature death. Goldfish are beautiful fish and should be in large tanks! Also, remember goldfish require weekly 30% water changes and a close eye on your water parameters. They sure are worth it, though!! I love my goldies!

Best of luck!!
