I kept some that I had caught while fishing once in an old bathtub I had in the basement - it wasn't heated and I fed them crickets and feeder minnows. Had them for about a year and then I released them back into the pond where I had caught them. I think the constant higher temp of a heated tropical tank would be a bit too much and they would definitely eat anything they could fit in their mouths.

When I used to live in CA, we had this huge container pond outside (not really sure what it was meant to hold originally, but it was probably a 500 gallon metal holding container). We kept it in the shade so the water stayed cool, and we kept bluegill in there that we caught fishing in the aquaduct. I would not suggest putting them in an indoor tank, especially a heated one, but if you make some sort of a pond outside, they can be a rather interesting addition.
