How many gallons of water will you add this algae eater into, and with what fish? There are a few options open to you, depending on how much room is available. For instance, Malaysian trumpet snails work out just fine for small tanks, while a common pleco would be okay in a large pond, as long as the temperature didn't drop too low.

Define coldwater. Your conventional common pleco can tolerate temperatures of 50 degrees F.

If that is the case with the common pleco I could add one that can be removed after it outgrows its surroundings. Thanx for your input

So what do you plan to do to the pleco once it gets too big for its surroundings? Need to find a lfs who would be interested in a large pleco before you acquire what you know will only be a temporary fish.

How large is your tank? I've kept BNs in small ponds that periodically dip down to less than 60 degrees here (San Diego).

indeed, but they are messpots!

What about CAE or weatherloaches? the CAE do eat lods of algae when they are young, and they are cheap. I have only ever seen one slimesuck once, personally i think the reputation is somewhat undeserved.

there are always snails.

Depending on how low the temp is, there are plenty of temperate trops that could go.

If you want algae eating in particular, you an't go past platies, they gorge on the stuff, pick pick pick all day. Not as effective as a plac, but also not as messy.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

be careful with larger common plecs as they can be grumpy towards goldfish.

NOTE to common plecos the larger they get, the more algae they need, the more they need, the less abundance, therefore resulting pleco sucking on the goldfish. It happened to me

Gee

!!I think I just learned somthing new!!
