I didn't know if I should post this here, but what the heck. A friend of mine has a "pond" in his backyard that his mom and brother made like 7 years ago. I would say its about 40-50 US Gallons. She hasn't put fish in it for the past 2 summers. She just uses it for water plants. Well, she went to go clean it early last week to find that there wasn't any algae anywhere. Then she noticed what she originally thought was only 3 fish. She was quite perplexed. She asked me if I had put them in there. I know that I didn't so she asked her boys. They told her no as well. So, being the fish lover I am, I asked her if I could catch them to see what they were. So... long story short her son and I pulled 5 small black goldfish out of the pond. I was wondering if it is possible that they are from eggs that possibly could have been from a plant she purchased from a garden show in the spring? Would the eggs have survived? My only other theroy is that a really really smart bird selected 5 of the exact same fish and neatly deposited them in this pond. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone.

it is very possible that the eggs have come from a plant she brought. eggs can be spread by ducks as well, the eggs stick to their feet, and then they travel to new pond the eggs, either hatch or drop off, not that likely in a 40gallon pond, prrob from plants.

how big are the fish?

they will prob start to change colour soon, can do this anytime within first 3 years of live. if she wants to keep the fish i would say increase the size of the pond, to at least 250gallons so that the fish can grow.

what a nice freebe to get, buy plant get 5 free fish.

Yes, I would have to agree. I would say they came from the plants. Goldfish love to lay eggs in 'bushy' plants, and thats where most of them spawn in ponds...I wish i could get that deal...buy a java fern and get 5 free discus

I told her that I thought they were eggs from the plants, but she refused to believe me. She saw all of your posts and she still doesn't believe me. She thinks it is some big trick we are playing on her. Some people... you know. Shekoi, the 3 big fish are about 2 inches long and the 2 little ones are about an inch. They are gold which fades to black on top. Any idea what kind they are? And thanks for all the help from everyone.

they are normal common goldfish by the sounds of it, can't really say with out seeing a photo.

when i had fry from my pond all the young fish were black, then they slowly started charging colour. they are about 2 years old now and around 4in, i have all white, gold and white, orange, orange and white and some are still black.

are you inteading to increase the pond size, sounds like they have grown well in the small pond, but they need a bigger filtered pond.

So, I have to wait a few years to find out what kind they are? Blast.... can't we just speed up time or something. I have no patience :%) . That's ok... I guess I'll make it. She doesn't plan on expanding the size of her pond at all. I think she just wants the fish until the end of this summer to help maintain an algea free pond. Then I think she plans to hopefully give them to me . I plan on keeping the 2 little ones because I an going to put a pond in this fall I think. I will probably give the 3 big ones to a friend of mine who has a huge huge pond. Thanks for all of your help everyone.
