Free Goldfish at LFS... | |
T/A Mega Fish Posts: 942 Kudos: 1796 Registered: 20-Feb-2004 | One of the stores around me is giving 2 free Comet Goldfish, to anyone that wants them, this entire week. You don't even need to purchase anything. Has anybody else seen a store do this? |

Not to sound awful, but seeing as how some things are so much worse than death, hopefully more of them will see the inside of an Oscar, than will see a 1/2 gallon fishbowl in a child's bedroom. Poor little guys! Either way, what a life! |

They must be overrun with comets that they're giving away for free. Or just desperate to get people in the store. And of course, in the ad, right aside of the "free goldfish" they had 2 gallon tanks and bowls. So yeah, most of those Goldfish won't live very long. |

But you're right, they're likely to end up in bowls or those 2 gallon tanks Is there any way you could talk to the management. If you've been there a few times bring that up tell them you love their store but think it's highly irrisponsible what they're doing . Poor Goldfish, no one ever cares about them . ^_^ |

I know at my LFS that it's impossible to explain to people that bowls are not okay for goldfish. I at least feel better about selling goldfish for bowls by telling them that they need to do weekly 100% water changes in those bowls. |

betahex Fish Addict Posts: 864 Kudos: 352 Votes: 0 Registered: 11-Jul-2001 | i tell people that if they wanted to keep goldfish in bowls, they'd need to change the entire bowl of water every other day. that usually works in steering them away from putting goldfish in bowls...but then there are always those people who claim to have kept a goldfish in a bowl for 5 or 6 years. |

janenenc Hobbyist Posts: 113 Kudos: 35 Votes: 3 Registered: 20-Feb-2003 | I was one of those people who kept my comet in a 2 gal (10 litre tank) for 5 years (yes - 5 years). I was never told any different by the LFS but now I have gained more knowledge he is in a larger tank and the 2 gal is home for a fighting fish. So, please don't blame those people who 'claim to have kept a fish in a bowl for 5 years' - often it is because they have not been given the right advice. |

T/A Mega Fish Posts: 942 Kudos: 1796 Registered: 20-Feb-2004 | I believe betahex only made that comment because it is near impossible to keep a goldfish alive for that long in that small amount of water/space. Whoever has done that, is very good with fish keeping. Or just lucky. PS - How big is your Goldfish now? After 5 years, it should be fully grown. Which would make it bigger than any 2 gallon tank I know of. |

janenenc Hobbyist Posts: 113 Kudos: 35 Votes: 3 Registered: 20-Feb-2003 | No - he/she is not that big! Only about 10 cm long and I've definately had him/her for around 5 years because I got it just before I moved in with my boyfriend. Maybe it is possible that keeping it in a small tank has caused it's growth to stunt. It has survived many fish and even managed to survive 2 weeks of care from my flatmate when I was overseas. I home to brown water and a very furry fish with opaque eyes and blood streaked fins!! I was horrified but it pulled through after with lots of TLC with no adverse affects (that was 3 years ago) |
