Ok, first of all I know that they get huge, and need to be in a pond eventually. BUT my daughter won one at the local 'bazzar' she went to w/my mom over the weekend. I was NOT prepared for this so right now it's all alone in a 2 gal tank. Now, Next spring (april or may) i'll be building a pond so it'll go in there then but til then what can I get away w/as I don't have much room in my house. the fish is only about 2" long right now...sooooo, help!

Thanks!
Robin

Ahhh the dreaded fair fish....well if it survives he'll be okay for now in either the largest tank you can get or...use a rubbermaid stock tank

I suggest the stock tank not only because they are less expensive then the same ammount of gallons in glass, but also because they have a very large surface area which is good for the fish. The two gallon is just way to small, even long term. Goldfish do create more waste than other fish and since they do grow so large, will be stunted early on being left in that tank for too long.

I had planned on getting a 10 gal for the winter...I don't have room to put anything any bigger especially not a stock tank (we have 9 ppl in a 3 bedroom house)....so, anyway, thanks and any more input or info will be appreciated...Thanks!

The smaller version of the stock tank is a rubbermaid container - they sell these cheap almost anywhere. A simple 20-40 gal one fits in a surprising number of places (the garage, if it never hits freezing temps in there, for example) and would be a safe home for him.

True, @the very least the rubbermaid containers would work...I've used them as transport containers and hospital tanks. The only concern with them is that the plastic isn't strong enought to fully support the weight of the water. With some support against the outside it may help, otherwise just keep an eye on it.

Feeding lots of veggies and over filtering the tank should help as well.

GGGRRRR, now i know why i planned on waiting to get a goldfish or a koi! This is so frustrating! She meant well but heck, this is going to be a pain in the patootie! We only have a carport and like I said no room for anything that won't fit on my kitchen counter. I think I'm going to try to talk her into taking it to our local LFS for now and just getting one later when we are prepared for it...But she's 11 and there's no telling how she'll react...LOL, well, wish me luck!

Good luck, remind her that it's really the best for the fish, that unless given a good environment to grow in the fish is likely to die. It's kinda like her having to sit in the backseat on a 5day car trip but with no stops, no chance to streatch her legs, or fall asleep comfortably. And just like the fish, she wouldnt' be able to complain or ask for anything.

Maybe point out the bettas .

If you can't find a nice betta you could try distracting her with a stuffed Nemo or one of his friends.
