At that age I see a lot of head growths that need trimming which is usually a bit beyond the hobbyist. A beautiful fish, even if high maintenence Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn. |

Stella Big Fish Posts: 387 Kudos: 974 Votes: 16 Registered: 23-Feb-2003 | I have finally decided that I am going to do a 55 gallon goldie tank. I went to the lfs today to see if I could make up my mind about what to put into the tank. I walked by the red capped orandas and decided right then I wanted those. I still have a few questions about them before I actually purchase them. 1.) Can I use those to cycle the tank or am I going have to think about another method? 2.) Can I put 3-4 of them in a 55 gallon?? (will get larger tank down the road if they need one.) 3.) I've never kept goldies before so anything about general care would be greatly appreciated. I think thats about all I needed to ask (I'm sure there will be something else that I have forgoteen) Thanks for all the help!! Stella Big Fish Posts: 387 Kudos: 974 Votes: 16 Registered: 23-Feb-2003 | I just thought I would update this thread and let everyone know how my goldie is doing. As you know I got a red capped oranda and she(thats what I call it anyway. not really sure if it is) is doing great!! I checked the tank today and discovered that I am finished with my cycle, my nitrates are at about 20 ppm so its time for a water change. I'll try to get some pics of her in the next couple of days so I can show her off. Thank you all for the help you have given me!! Stella |

I agree that you need to do a weekly water change and vaccum of the gravel. Also vary diet including veggies. Goldies get a thumbs up from me. ENJOY ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

houston Fish Guru You want what when? Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | I have 3 goldies in my 55 gallon and they are doing fine...as long as you realize you may need a larger tank down the road, and are prepared to invest again go for 3 maybe 4 (I also have a large pleco in there, though everyone else says he should be dead by now, he keeps on ticking)... For feeding I like Wardly's slow sinking goldfish crumble, ok, I've never tasted it but the goldies go crazy for it. I've also found that they go crazy for orange slices (though be warned a water change is needed after feeding these, they make a horrible mess). I've had fights break out in the tank over cauliflower and broccoli (I buy the whole frozen bits, and then defrost under hot water before chunking it into the tank)...Eggs if super-hard boiled are yummy, and will be devoured (watch the fingers). I once put in well cooked spaghetti noodles, and it was hilarious to watch them eat those (they loved them, but make sure they are about 1/2 in length... For live food, baby brine shrimp are good, but a true joy is ghost shrimp...just have to make sure the goldies don't jump out trying to chase the shrimp I'm glad we have another goldie fan and I hope yours grow as big, fat, sassy, and happy as mine...best of luck, Heidi [span class="edited"][Edited by hmlaird 2004-06-08 20:25][/span] "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." SheKoi Fish Addict Posts: 667 Kudos: 553 Votes: 4 Registered: 11-Feb-2004 | 1.) Can I use those to cycle the tank or am I going have to think about another method? should be ok as goldies are hardy fish, might be better to use commons then return them. 2.) Can I put 3-4 of them in a 55 gallon?? (will get larger tank down the road if they need one for fancies in a 55g i'd say 2 for the moment then get a bigger tank, they do get very big and round. 3.) I've never kept goldies before so anything about general care would be greatly appreciated do two water changes a week 15-25% as they are dirty fish wet all food for 2 minutes before feeding to help against swim bladder problems. change the diet so fish don't eat same food all time, vegges and life food are good. they like peas! (not tinned) hope this helps. www.blooming-brilliant.co.uk |
