I had a big gold oranda all through grade school/high school (I'm 34 now... so a long time ago) and I've wanted to get another one for years, but just haven't had the space or found the right one... Until today. I found one who's about 3 inches long (not including tail) at LFS about 80 miles from here. I couldn't resist... so I brought him home. My boyfriend named him "Tater." LOL

Anyway... Tater's in a 30 gallon cycled aquarium. I've had the aquarium for a LONG time, and since I upgraded to my 40 gallon acrylic... it's been empty with the exception of a handful of White Clouds in there to keep it cycled.

My questions are... will he be okay by himself in the 30 gallon? Is it going to be big enough if it's just him? Should I leave the white clouds in there with him?? I added some NIC to the tank, since I increased the bio-load so much... even if it only was one fish... one really BIG fish. LOL

Anything else I need to know?? It's been a long time since I had a goldfish!! And I want to do things right this time. Thanks!

To be truthful, a 30 gallon tank is awfully small for a goldfish, especially when you consider how large they can get. (see link) I personally would keep a goldfish in no less than a 55 gallon tank when the fish is fully grown, though larger is better. Sorry for the bad news, but you did want to do things right...

Not bad news at all really... at his current size, how long can I leave him comfortably in the 30 gal before I need to get him a bigger tank?

I don't have a problem getting a 55 gallon tank or bigger for him... I am thinking something like that would look really nice in my bedroom... Anyway... he's about 3 inches right now. I just need to have some time to save up for a bigger tank. My sis is thinking about getting rid of her 120 gallon... if I was really lucky, I might be able to buy hers.

How much time do you think I have? And how big will he get at full size? Oh... last thing... Will he be happy alone? Or do they need other fish with them?
