Non-fishfood stuff you feed your goldies | |

Do you clip it, spike it, how? Pics would be great. I just cut the tip of an orange clementine, squeezed some of the juice out, cleaned out just enough for a clip to grab on to one end. Goldies are trying to figure out what to make of it . |

It seems that they like to nibble on the stuff every so often, but it's nothing compared to the orangivores I see at petsmart (yes, I occasionally shop at petsmart, wanna make something of it? ]:|). They ignore lettuce and zucchini (but my tropicals like zucchini) ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

Cory_Di *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 7953 Kudos: 2917 Votes: 25 Registered: 19-Dec-2002 | Well, mine cleaned out the orange tip in about 6 hours. There was only a small amount of that white, clear fibrous stuff floating at the top, so they definitely ate the majority of it. I cut it aross the orange sections to expose them and only the very top of the orange so the deepest part was about 1/2 inch. I tried a small slice of apple today, but they chewed it and spit it out so I yanked it outta there. I have seen where people put pear, watermelon, and canteloupe rinds. However, I'd have to sterilize those melons since they can carry salmonella among other nasties (from sitting in deer and rodent poop in the fields). When I put organic romaine lettuce in there in the past, I shreded the tips so that it made strands small enough to fit into their mouths. I do the same with the seaweed sheets I put in there. It's easier for them to tear off a piece. Good for Swimbladder Disorder I don't know if I've mentioned it on here before, but my goldies love this stuff. I cut a sheet, across the perforated grains about one inch wide. I then make cuts about 1/8 inch wide (small enough for them to take strips into their mouths), and hang the end in a veggie clip (which is why I don't slice it all the way through). It took them a good half hour to figure out what the dangling "arms" were. Then they discovered it was food and would suck in a good 1/2 inch or more into their mouths then start to rip and tear wildly at it. This stuff has helped my one goldie with swim bladder disorder more than peas. I don't know why. When he starts floating too much, I put some in and within a few hours of nibbling on it, he is back to normal. I know fiber can help them, but other fibrous foods, including peas, don't do this for him. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=11462&N=2004+113278 Last edited by Cory_Di at 27-Nov-2004 10:48 Last edited by Cory_Di at 27-Nov-2004 10:50 |

I will stick to peas for them to supplement their shop food. Interesting to hear what other goldies will eat. I like it. ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

I am sure it is good for them. I had it in my salad I brought to work for lunch. Ah, so nice to share my lunch with the wishies. houston Fish Guru You want what when? Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | Could I ask what they don't eat? I've fed small bits of salad shrimp, peas (a favorite), carrots, brocolli, cauliflower, boiled eggs (hardboiled, then some), spaghetti (this was a hoot to watch!!! They would slurp them up like we do when they are too long), oranges, ghost shrimp (amusing as well, the shrimp would try to jump out, and the goldies go after them)...Like I said, what won't they eat??? Oh and when I'm doing something in the tank...my fingers, hands, and arms... That can't be good for them, can it?
