Tell me - I'd expect a 4 year old goldfish to be at least 12" if it's a common and 6-8" if it's a fancy, that's not including tail - how big are yours? Do you have pictures? Because a stunted goldfish is suffering terribly. And unless you can prove to me the fish made it to 20 and full-sized, that only supports the well-known fact that goldfish can survive even in terrible quarters. -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

Mine have only been in the pond for a few weeks are having already grown half an inch, and it's still cold outside. Carp grow very quickly when given the right conditions. Food, water quality, temperature and space all play very important rolls in fish development and if any of them are poor, the growth rate will suffer. |

fish007 Enthusiast Posts: 224 Kudos: 55 Votes: 0 Registered: 24-Jun-2003 | Well I have 2 small goldfish in a 10 gallon. Many sites say 1 goldfish per 10 gallons of water, go look around and you'll see. So that means when they get a little bit bigger I can put them in my 29 gallon and everything will be fine. But I wouldnt want the same goldfish for years and years anyways. I like to exchange my fish after awhile because it gets boring looking at the same fish everyday. I want to sell my goldfish when they get bigger, and use the profit to buy new baby goldfish. I think thats the way to go, cause then you'll never have to pay hundreds of dollars for larger and larger tanks. |

Janna Mega Fish Posts: 1386 Registered: 24-Aug-2003 | Argh. Just argh. I could say so many things to some of you, but I'm going to try and be calm so you all understand. :%) Goldfish can not be kept in a 10 gallon. They just get too big! Do you know how big an oscar gets? Goldies get that big. There are no if's, and's, or but's about it. I don't care what any stupid rule says. If I made a rule that says that arowannas can be kept for life in 3 gallons of water, would you believe me? No, because you know it isn't true. Arowannas can reach over 3 feet in length. The goldie would get almost as long, or longer than, that 10 gallon! I'm sorry, but you are just wrong. They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver, So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces. |

We are debating whether it can be done successfully. YOU try keeping 4 common goldfish in a ten gallon and having them live their entire lifespans. I will give a shiny nickel if you can. Anyone can just keep a goldfish for 2 or 3 years. |

But in this case it's pretty clear that 10 gallons just isn't enough. Big fish -] big tank. -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | How could it possibly be? Look, I'm putting a picture of Bruce the Oranda at the bottom of this post so it's obvious how big goldfish can really get. Goldfish get HUGE. Putting 3-4 goldfish in a 30 is the equivalent of putting as many oscars in there, or even worse. They're big, big, big fish and need space! And if you meant one 3-4" goldfish, that's still too much - one goldfish is more than enough to stock one 30 gallon tank. Just because you could keep three goldfish in a 90 gallon tank doesn't mean you can keep one in a 30 gal; it doesn't work that way. You can keep two oscars in a 75 gal, maybe; does that mean you can keep one oscar in 32 gallons? Of course not! (As to why I'm always using the oscar comparison: everyone knows they get big and need a ton ton ton of space. Goldfish get as big or bigger but no one acknowledges their similar needs, which is so utterly frustrating!) littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | First off, he didn't mean it's a life like "it's the sum total of my life," he meant "fish life is still life and should be respected." Second, ou don't have to be made of money. It's extremely easy to keep fish cheaply - just choose the right ones! You wouldn't keep Neons with Oscars because it's obviously counterintuitive, yet you recommend buying goldfish for smaller tanks than they need. Both end in unecessary death! It's just the same! If you can't afford a bigger tank, that's perfectly understandable - pick small fish! Don't torture a big fish to death when there are a billion wonderful fish that could live in there perfectly well. Would you keep an oscar in a 30 gallon tank? Of course not! Well, a fancy goldfish can easily have oscar mass if allowed the space it needs, and a common goldfish can be much bigger than an oscar. It's not any different. Big fish need big space. If you don't have big space - keep smaller fish! They can be just as interesting or more so! -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

Fish Guy Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 | Also if fishkeeping is a life to some people (unless they own a fish store) you need to get a job or a hobby. I love keeping fish but I look at it as being a hobby and most people on this site must be made of money. I say this because people always say get bigger tanks or you have to get bigger tanks for those fish. Come on now you got to think of the new people just getting in to the hobby. It is an expensive hobby, so be prepared. |

Fish Guy Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 | Get some goldfish. Get 3 or 4. Try to get them a bit big so the tank does'nt look empty with just 3 or 4 fish in it. Putting 4-5 goldfish in a 10 gallon is still being nice to them because in the pet store there is 20-25 in a 10 gallon. But anyway get the goldfish you want. |
