SheKoi Fish Addict Posts: 667 Kudos: 553 Votes: 4 Registered: 11-Feb-2004 | A friend of mine has asked me about his ghost koi, it has an injury on his back closr to it's fin, he said it is getting bigger by the day, it's red around the edges and a grey fleshy colour inside, looks deep. What could it be? what do we need to do? the fish doesn't see affected, still swimming and eating? could it be harmful to add algaeside, as the pond is getting over grown! Cheers shekoi. www.blooming-brilliant.co.uk |

Would it be possible to move him to another container/tank while treating him? If so I would, a big rubbermaid container can always be used as a holding tank if it's been cleaned and the water in it has been treated Either way, if you can or can't move said Koi to another container, I would go and get some MelaFix, in this case in the pond section of the LFS or whatever...I believe it is actually called Pond Mela Fix, it is the same thing as the regular but a stronger dose, so that you use less of it...Know what size the pond or container is and follow the dosing directions... I'm thinking the cause of this injury could be the koi scraping up against something perhaps? That or eeek I hate to think of it, a bird or cat getting a little too close and causing the damage? Either way I'm thinking the MelaFix will do the job in helping the wound to heal...Do keep an eye on the koi and those others also in the pond while treating and see if you can find out what it was that caused the cut... As for the Algae stuff, you want to add, I'd definately hold off. I don't know a whole lot about ponds or what the stuff actually is...but I'd try to find a more natural way to get rid of or prevent the algae, for now a good scrub with a rougher sponge (if the algae is really stuck) should help remove it...just becareful not to tear your liner in the pondthen there would be a ton of other problemsor if it is more the hair algae, just start pulling it out the best you can, and do a cleaning of the pond... Best of luck heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Thomas Carlyle |
