I caught a small Prickly Sculpin (Cottus asper) during the summer for my California natives tank, and he has been doing really well. His colors are bright, he's very active, and he eats whatever I put in the tank (even algae wafers).

The only problem is that he's barely grown at all since I put him in the tank. Maybe about half an inch in six months. How fast are they supposed to grow? I know their relatives the Lionfish grow pretty quickly.

I have also seen a very wide range of their supposed maximum size, ranging anywhere from 3 - 14"...

Are you serious? Fishbase lists their maximum size as about a foot, and mentions that they would be an excellent food fish if they weren't so hard to catch.

Sorry. That was intended to be 4.5". Females grow much smaller; ~3" at the quoted age.
