A friend of our family had a goldfish from a fair in a 10 gallon tank, upon hearing this I thought of course the fish must be huge and stunted but when I fish sat for a few days I saw no signs of stunting and an apparently happy goldfish only about 3 inches long. It recently kicked the bucket after 3 years in its 10 gallon tank. What type of goldfish stays small enough to fit in a 10 gallon tank?

No goldfish can live in a 10 gallon tank. If that goldfish died when it was three years old, then it died when it was baby. Goldfish are supposed to live 20-30 years, and the oldest recorded was 43.

most carnaval goldfish are comets and commons which are far second largest goldfish. yes, fancier types dont reach as large as singled tailed goldfish(koi, commons, comets) they still will outgrow a 10 gallon. u may not see signs of stunting, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. really their are no small goldfish.

A 2 year old gold fish is still a baby, and if it stays in that tank much longer it will die. Goldfish get to be a foot or so, which is BIGGER than the tank its self. It just doesn't work.

PS Goldfish have a very long lifespan of about 30-40 years.

Definitely possible, the problem is that the poor fish is stunted
