Ok heres the deal. I have a 30 gal pond set up, it has 5 comets and one orianda (spelling). I know it's overstocked. It's suposed to be. The purpose of this pond is to keep 5 sponge filters cycled for my betta breeding program. I do have one very large sponge filter that will never leave the pond in ther also. I have a deal worked out with the LFS to trade the fish in for smaller ones every few months or so. My question is, in this setup about how much time do I have before they begin to stunt? I really do not want them stunting at all. Thanks for any help.

1-2 Months max if you don't want them stunting at all... Goldfish grow _really_ fast... Mine were growing at about .5-1 inch per month when I had them.

A better choice to keep a bacteria pool would be guppies or possibly white clouds. If you go with guppies you can probably even make money off them...

Guppies huh? hmmmmmmmm Lord knows I have plenty of those . I chose goldfish simply because of the bioload that they produce. Remember these filters will need to support 300+ fry before thy get jarred.

That being said, how many guppies do you think I would need to keep in there to produce a large biolaod?

1-2 per gallon would provide quite a lot if you feed them a few times a day, and eventually they'll make 100s of fry for you, and that'll create an even larger bio-load. If you throw in a clump of java moss that'll help keep the water cleaner and provide a hiding place for the guppy fry.

I think ammonia production is not based so much upon food supply as it is upon movement and methods of ammoniogenesis, in which case the goldfish would still stress nitrification more than the fry, as goldfish fixate ammonia in several different ways (which is why they are considered to be some of the messiet fish around).

EDIT: Content and spelling
