My ponds in Ga don't quite need it yet, but I have helped start the take down of some here in Nebraska, where we have our first night in the 30's this week. I've only got one tiny pond, and I need to get in there and harvest the white clouds I put in back in May. BTW, I've got about 5 frogs using the pond; will they leave on their own, or should I do anything to help them overwinter? I was going to put styrofoam on top of the water, and run an airline to break the surface tension in the hopes of helping to prevent a complete freeze over. Will that help them? |

Better to run the smaller ponds without them. Instead a surface heater or even just the styrofoam floating does help. It also helps to take a hot pan and gently set it down making a hole in the surface daily during the winter to keep the ice open. Koi Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn. |
