Yoshi!!! - He shocked me | |
Cory_Di *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 7953 Kudos: 2917 Votes: 25 Registered: 19-Dec-2002 | Mods, please leave here as many coldwater people don't frequent hospital forum. Just looking to see if anyone else has experienced this. My Yoshi, the red-capped oranda was laying on the gravel and I didn't think anything of it as my other oranda likes to sleep on the gravel. Fins were fully extended, but he seemed to appear exhausted. He would move a bit, then collapse right back down on the gravel - upright. Then, he moved up along the glass in front of me and I almost fell backwards. The center of his gut including the anal fins were completely caved inward like a deflated soccer ball. I have reluctantly put food in the tank and as usual he pigged out and pushed everyone out of the way to get at it. Then, his belly re-inflated within minutes. I was trying to get pictures of the concave appearance, but he was already looking normal again. He was without food only one day and is usually fed twice a day. He has been dealing with increasingly worse swim bladder problems, with long white, gassy, stringy feces. Read that, I think he has worms. I have been in contact with a vet a few miles away who offered to examine a specimen for a $17 US fee, if I can get a really fresh one. I'll be off for four days, so hopefully I can catch one on Friday or Monday when the vet office is open. I have an OTC parasite med in there (Parasite Clear Tank Buddies with Praziquantel). This stuff is suppose to eliminate tapeworm and similar within a few hours. 7 weeks ago, I used this stuff and later that evening a long (50mm), creamy, white thread-like thing was draped on the plant leaves. The next day I found another. It looked nothing like poop and I had seen one of these hanging from the smaller oranda(female) who has not had nearly the swim bladder problems since that first round. Since one round was suppose to be enough I didn't bother until Yoshi started showing all the symptoms again. I dosed the tank again and the next day found another white thread in the tank. I caught it, put it in a bottle and then began calling around to find a vet who would analyze it. It took two days and I found someone 5 days away, but they said the sample is useless that old. It needs to be a few hours max. They look for movement so the buggers need to still be alive. I regret not taking it in anyway to have them examine the thread which was still fully intact after 2 days in refigerated tank water. I have since discarded it. ]:| I just hit the tank again with Parasite Clear and hope I'll see another thread to grab and take tomorrow. I'm concerned for Yoshi. I thought he was checking out on me. Since eating a few minutes ago he is moving about the tank like nothing is wrong. [span class="edited"][Edited by Cory_Di 2004-04-07 20:05][/span] |

He was just laying completely exhausted on the gravel. When I dropped food in he charged after it and inflated before my eyes. Go figure. Now he is back to floating like a bobber again. I keep waiting to catch a poopie from him so I can take it to the vet for analysis. I don't care if I feed him a pea or whatever, he floats with SBD. I was attempting to fast him when his gut sunk in like that. |

I walked over to the tank, and he was just lying there, and when he saw me he made an effort to get up but his tummy was all sucked in and deflated! I immediately fed some peas, and I have medi-gold on order, should be coming within the next few days! I am so worried, I've never had any sbd like problems with him... How's Yoshi doing? |

He just kinda reinflated when i fed him the peas... Weird, huh? i purchased some Medi-gold med food, and am putting him on a round of that, which has helped already with the white poo, so good news there. he is still happy as a clam, swimming around with his dorsal erect and getting his nosy little mug into everything! |

The medigold is helping, there are still some casings in his poo, but it's not the scary stringy-hey-i've-got-an-internal-infection poo By the end of this course of med food I'm sure he'll be good as new |

I finally have "good" poop from him, short chunky, and the color of his food. I will keep him on it for probably another few days or so, though. until I see LOTS of good poop, and NO bad poop |

Cory_Di *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 7953 Kudos: 2917 Votes: 25 Registered: 19-Dec-2002 | Yoshi was on medi-gold and metro-med for about 21 days many months ago. His poop improved dramatically and swim-bladder disorder disappeared. I later figured that it may have been the blend of food moreso than the medication. I tried to find something similar, but have not been successful. I bought Pro-Gold, which is by the same maker, I believe, as Medi-Gold, but within 2 days of being on this the swim bladder disorder returned. I truly believe it is dietary. People have lactose intolerance, and some even have difficulty digesting certain carbohydrates or proteins. Fish can have the same types of things I imagine. So, something he eats just doesn't agree with him. I have found that by feeding a meal every other day of algae strips like this one http://www.ponddepot.com/golgrazdried.html works well to keep him cleaned out, rather than peas. However, I think SeaWeed Selects has discontinued this particular version. I am feeding the regular green algae sheets that they feed the SW fish. I take about a 1 inch by 2 inch sheet and cut it into squares small enough for them to eat rather than hang it on a clip. The way they were yanking and pulling, I was concerned they would get scrapes as they bumped into the clip. Then, I feed them just one or two Pro-Gold Pellets or a few goldfish flakes the next day. If I feed him too much he floats. It is after he has bobbed up at the top for a long time that his gut sinks in and he drops to the bottom. Any piece of food at that time makes it go back in. It is pretty horrible looking. It's just a matter of me finding the right mix of foods to give for his tender digestion system. BTW - Yoshi's new nickname is "bobber". Unfortunately, I just noticed today that he has developed an irritation or infection up along the top of his back at his dorsal fin. When he 'bobs', this sticks out of the water. I put PimaFix and MelaFix in because it is all bloody and I'm going to add some salt. I may have to put him back on the MediGold if it looks more serious.
