i have had my goldfish (common) up for about a year and i know that if you add a new one the other ones will kill it, but i was wondering about size. when i add alittle feeder it gets eatten, but i have one that was a science pet at my sisters school that she gave me and the other ones got bigger but he stayed under 1 in and they leave him alone. do gold fish make family bonds?

I have had a goldfish (common) for years, I got him with 3 other fish, who all died, leaving him on his own, probably about 5 years later I thought he deserved to have a friend in there with him, and bought a black moor of roughly the same size. They do more than get on great, and I am currently looking after 20 goldfish/blackmoor fry.
I have never heard that befor about them killing new fish in the tank, not unless they where small enough to get in their mouths.

Hmmm I've had my common goldfish with:
zebra danios (first few hours he was a little "interested" but never ate)
cory's (he loved those guys !)
gold barbs (also made great friends with them even though they were smaller than his tail fin!)
Rosy Barbs (I think he's somewhat frustrated with these guys...they snatch his peas away).

This fish was originally with 2 other common goldfish (in a bowl on my bosses dining room table ) but hasn't been with his own kind since the other two (understandably ) passed on. Don't know if this answers your question much, but even with the young zebras that I had him with for over a year he never showed any interest in going after them.

^_^

how big it the tank/pond your keeping him in? it could be down to amount of room,

if big enough tank for more goldies try moving rocks/plants around before adding new fish.

i've never had a problem with adding new fish, i've never really brought all my fish at the same time,
