bettachris Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3875 Kudos: 4173 Votes: 452 Registered: 13-Jun-2004 | always a question of mines. how come gold fish like cold water. what makes them specail that they can live in cold water where as most fish live in warm water. like freeder gold fish right, they are really skinny but they live in cold water. |

Goldfish tend to live in cooler-water areas in the wild, and have lived in such areas for many thousands of years. As such, they have evolved to thrive in cool water, and therefore prefer it over tropical water. The inverse is the same for the fish that prefer warm water. Basically, it is a direct result of the environment that the fish live in. |

During the winter, it can run below freezing, and in the summer, it's muggy, humid, and quite warm. Thusly, they do well in most temperatures, though a cycle of warm/cold is probably optimal for breeding and the happiness of your fish in general--which is probably why goldies do so well in ponds.
