I was wondering if anyone had advice on convincing customers that goldfish really do get large and need a large tank. As an employee at an LFS this is probably the most difficult thing I have ever had to do, anyone have thoughts?

Show them some pictures, or an actual goldfish with some size.

Pics are a good idea...goldfish are part of the carp family, I think people might be able to associate with that as well. I can understand how hard it'll be though , after all I bet we all grew up seeing pictures of goldfish in bowls .

yeah, and it doesn't help that my store sells "goldfish" bowls.

Of course, I love the reactions I get when I tell people that goldfish should not be kept in that bowl.

Smash all the bowls! Or, could you the person who orders supplies not to get any more bowls?

Print this out, and show them. The goldfish is larger than a "goldfish bowl"

Yes! The Bruce picture is your best bet. And remind them that the goldfish they're used to seeing in bowls, ie commons and comets, get even longer (if not necessarily more massive). But - pictures pictures pictures.

Now that's a goldfish SolubleFish !

No, smashing bowls won't get you anywhere....except maybe jail. Although maybe repeated comments to the store could possibly guilt them into not selling them....it'll be hard though...money does talk afterall.

And remember, a lot of those bowls are sold for bettas. Our store has a sign on every goldfish tank that says "goldfish are not bowl fish, buy a betta" and the bowls we sell, although a couple are marketed as "goldfish bowls" are used almost 100% for bettas (the few that sell for goldfish get lectures and a no guarantee on the fish if they buy the fish from us, but we can't actually stop them).

Ooh, I like those ideas. Pictures are always good and with a sign I'm not asking them to stop selling them...just redirecting the customers...maybe I'll look into that one. Thanx for the ideas!
