i was thinking for the summer can i get a up ground pond maybe 300 gallons. i aunt has about 5-6 large koi that need a home. i was planning on putting them in there. will it work.

That is way too small for koi. You need a very large pond to house even 1 koi, let alone that number.

will this be better than a 120 gallon tank that they are in now? also will i need a cover so that animals dont eat them. i live by the water and i think that there will be sea gulls, but not to much of land animals.

How big are they right now?

My pond club's standard recommendation is at least 300 gallons per koi.

But if they're very small and you're willing to keep on top of water quality, install major filtration and do regular water changes, maybe it would do as a very temporary measure till you can find them other homes.

By the way, if you're doing this because you've always wanted a pond, trust me, you'll want one bigger than 300 gallons. They're addicting -- last year we enlarged ours to 500 gallons, and I'd love to go 2 or 3 times that size.
