Hi all,
my sister has one of those hexa fun tanks plastic with a UGF. Not sure what I should tell her to put in it? Im not sure the capacity until she brings it up in two weeks but just wondering what the best coldwater fish/species are for a beginner?

Cheers!

Don't bother with the UGF, instead turn it into a betta tank (not coldwater). Bettas only require about a gallon of water which should recieve 50-100% water changes daily. No coldwater fish (ESPECIALLY goldfish) will fit in that sized tank. You'll be able to have one male betta, possibly a snail, or African dwarf frog, or a few shrimp depending on the temperment of the betta.

I would follow the advice of the lovely Babel. A little heater is quite inexpensive and a male beta would be soooooo rewarding.

<insert wish-ga jealous pout here>

A really small tank? I would put in plants and a few rams horn snails. They are great little guys.

Depending on size...

1 Gallon (one of the following)
*1 Male Betta
*1 Female Betta
*Shrimp
*Snails (good for raising snails for puffers, etc)
*Live foods (brine shrimp, etc)

2-3 gallon (one of the following)
*1 Male Betta (possibly with a tankmate, see below)
*1-2 Female Bettas (depending on aggression)
*Trio: male guppies
*Trio: male endlers
*Trio: small killifish
*1-2 ADFs
*Shrimp
Possible betta tankmates: Shrimp, ADF, snails

I've collected these suggestions from similar posts on the site, but anyone can feel free to correct the lists.

aquariumfish.net seems to think that White Cloud Minnows can go in bowls... personally, I wouldn't do it, but it's better than a goldfish. I suggest a betta, some small killis, or the african dwarf frogs (ADF). I wouldn't go with female bettas, since I've never found any who won't get angry in small territories.

If you decide to put bettas just make shure they are healthy. Check to see that the fins have no signs of rotting and there are no bumps or spots. Also if you get a betta only feed it betta food. I found that Betta Bites are really good and healthy for the fish.

Finding a small heater can be a bit tough, and I'll let someone from oz answer that one since we've got different brands here .

Do you know what her house temp is day and night ? Depending on how much it swings you might not even need one.
