i was watching a documentry on pay-tv on ornamental carps. i seen gold fish go in to vats and be cooled to just about freezing temps and then put on a barge for live exporting for aquarium and pond fish.

is this a load of crap or is this what happens.

This actually wouldn't surprise me. Carp (goldfish and koi) are kept in garden ponds all over the world, even in places where temperatures drop very cold and the ponds freeze over. As long as the pond is deep enough that the Ice doesn't reach all the way to the bottom, the fish are just fine come Spring.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I believe the fish go into a dormant stage when this happens, lowering their metabolism so they don't eat and don't create much waste (a big concern if you're transporting a messy fish like carp in small amounts of unfiltered water). It may sound cruel, but it probably doesn't stress the fish out quite as much as traveling in dirty water with no food and poor oxygen levels, etc.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...
