I was just wondering if what i have is a good setup for a 10G -- i have 3 guppies (2 male 1 female) and a pleco (not sure on type -- about 2 inches) -- I'm new to the hobby and just want to make sure that i'm not going to kill my new fish. Its heated to about 76F.. came w/ a filter/heater from the aquarium kit. They seem to be happy... but my pleco likes to sit behind the heater... is this normal?

nope, frist welcome to F.P

but ur tank is overstocked.

plecos will get very large, and it probably is a common pleco.

guppies, like other livebearers give birth to live young, so they can easliy over stock a tank by breeding. the tank isn't large enough to have them breed, unless u h vae tanks for the fry.

when houseing livebeares in a small tank, only get males, due to the fact that females can store sperm, so they can drop babies without a male.

Heres a thread about houseing livebearers

(my g/f bought the pleco after i told her not to

Thank you very much... and thank you for the welcome btw.

I will probably donate the female back to the petstore -- my daugher loves the 2 males so i'll keep them and the pleco in my 10g for now.

6-8 male guppies would be fine in a 10 gallon, but not with the pleco, i'm sorry. Just make sure they are defintely all males, and don't buy any if the tank they are in has any fish that look remotely sick or unhealthy. Guppies are a nightmare if they catch a disease.

goodluck, and welcome!

Like everyone's said before, return the pleco.

Four males is a good number for a ten. I have noticed that in close quarters males can be a bit nippy. So give them plenty of room. Six or more is too much, IMHO.

I'll do graffiti,
If you sing to me in French.

I had 6 males in my 10 gallon without any problem. they all swam back and fourth together like a school. they defintely enjoyed the conpany as when i only had one it sulked all day.
