Putting 4 pygmy corys and a school of small tetras like neons AND a blue ram OR a dwarf gourami OR a similar sized fish that you like will be fine. None of those fish contribute an excessive amount to the bioload and the corys will help clean up any excess food. Stay on your maintenance and you'll be fine.

i second the aqua clear. the style of filter media allow you to rotate the sponges so you don't remove the bacteria.

for the fish i would go for
6 small schooling fish like neons(i would suggest harliquin rasboras or glowlight tetras)
5-6 small cories
1-2 dwarf gouramis instead of a ram

when you cycle the tank start with 3 of the small fish. when the cycle is done add the 3 other of the same fish. wait for the cycle to catch up again. repeate the process with 1/2 of the cories, then the other 1/2, then the gouramis. this may look over stocked but if the water is changed often you won't have problems.

20 Gallon Long:
Aquaclear 300
2 Bolivian Rams, Mikrogeophagus altispinosus: Gumby and Pokey

you could probably combine tetras, cories, and ONE ram as long as you clean they often. Actually, a ram is supposed to be housed with tetras. I would consider a ram before a leaf fish, or a shellie, or a butterfly fish, or anyhing as exotic as that

For Lookinaround: Filtration really depends on how much $ you have to spend. I personally like aquaclear mini on a planted 10 gallon tank. The surface agitation isn't to bad and with live plants that will also keep the nitrates low. I think bigalsonline.com has aquaclear mini for like 12 bucks. You could always go with an internal filter as well but those take up a large amount of space for a 10 gallon, especially with a heater in there as well.

Sparkling gouramis are great! | have 2 in my 10 gallon and they swim around together happily minding their own business. They only get a bit over an inch and are not to hard to take care of. The only problem is that they are a bit e to dropsy if any disease is in the tank. You could have like:
6 small tetras
6 small corys
Or
8 small corys or small tetras
1-2 pairs of sparkling gouramis
Or
6 small tetras
1-2 rams
Do you like any of them?
Sparkling gouramis are practically no bio-load, I have bearly ever seen mine poop...as for my othe fish

Good Luck!

Guppies probably aren't such a good idea unless you get either all female or all male, because they'll breed like rabbits and produce a lot of fry in your 10 gal

Also, is there any kind of small, safe, solitary fish for a 10 gal.?
A few come to mind, one of which is lots of different kinds of fancy plecos, zebras, clowns, bristlenose, inspector, etc, would be fine alone or with a mate in a 10g. I am sure there are some african cichlids that fit your question as well, although I am not an african cichlid keepers so someone else will have to chime in.

An African Butterfly fish would be a cool choice, or one of those Leaf fish (cant remember scientific name) they are pretty neat. Some people say Peacock Eels can be kept in a 10g, but you would have to ask people who keep them.

You could probably have a rainbow or red tail black shark in a 10g for awhile till he got bigger.

Also, some suggestions on small fish for a 10g:
Threadfin Rainbowfish
Celebes Rainbowfish
Both those fish are small and lovely! I think either would be fine in a nice school in a planted 10g tank.

Pygmy corys are great. I also have a pair of Sparkling Gourami in my 10 gallon. They only grow to about 1 1/2".
I also have a few cherry barbs. Just some ideas.

Can anyone suggest some ideas for a 10 gal. tank? I was thinking some kind of blend of tetras and corys. Maybe even a blue ram? I've been out of the hobby for a while, so I forgotten a great deal. I'm not really into livebearers or bettas, but I'm open to all kinds of possibilites. Thanks in advance.

I too was going to suggest a dwarf gourami They come in several pretty color combinations, and are very peaceful, just not with e/o.

Hmm...

So 6 cories and 6 neons. Can a dwarf cichild be added to that mix without being overstocked. 12 fish sounds like a lot already for a 10 gal.

Also can anybody direct me to any articles about cycling (I think that's what it's called) - to start the tank off. Although, I added tiger barbs immediately to my 20 gal. tank and they've all been living for the 3 years I've had them.

The neons and cories would work, but six cories would be much better than four. Cories really need to be kept in groups of at least six to keep them happy, and adding two cories would offset any effects from the extra waste.

You could keep a single curviceps cichlid in there, or pretty much any other dwarf cichlid. Also, a dwarf gourami would be just fine in that tank by itself.

Ohh, well there's a lot of things you could do with an empty ten gallon tank.

I have a link for cookie cutters somewhere...I'll find it later or I'm sure someone else will post it.

My favorite choice for an empty ten gallon is Shellies!!! The small shelldwellers from Lake Tanganyikan are just adorable IMO, and not too hard to take care of. The necessary set up is a little tricky initially, but nothing you couldn't handle I'm sure. If you visit the Lake Tang cichlid forum, there will be a good article by Mez on set up. Some multis or brevis would do nicely in that tank.

Other options include maybe a school of tiny tetras and a shoal of cories that don't get any bigger than pandas. Actually, I think harlies would make a good choice. They stay small. So do WCMMs, which can even be kept in coldwater!

I think rams deserve a little more than a ten gallon...some people will disagree. I think you could do balloon rams, but some people have things against those too...and they aren't readily available in all areas.

You could divide it and have a fancy betta on each side, or just one and keep ADFs and shrimpies too.

What interests you?

The best thing to do is go to your LFS with a pen and piece of paper and write down everything that interests you. Then reply back here, and tell us what you found, so we can continue to help you stock your tank.

EDIT: RATS! Everybodys beating me today!

Since you have only ten gallons to work with, I wouldn't recommend getting tetras and cories and a German blue ram. However, you can safely have any combination of these. Since German rams tend to be sensitive to water conditions though, I'd leave them out. In a ten gallon tank, it doesn't take much to adversely affect water quality.

Here's a nice sample stocking list:
7 small tetras (under 1.5 inches in size, like flame or lemon tetras)
6 small cories (under 2 inches in size, like panda or bandit cories)

Neither cories nor tetras affect the bioload much, so a school/shoal of each would be perfectly fine in your tank.

I really wouldn't suggest tetras for a 10. Even something as small as neons just dont look right when they're in that small of a space. But that's just MO... If you go with any stick with the smaller ones like neons and cards. Same thing applies to corys, stick with species that stay under 1.5" and I'd pick one or the other to go with.
