Ottos are schooling fish, prefer faster moving water and slightly cooler temperatures. I wouldnt reccomend them for a 10.

The tetras sound good, why artifical plants though? A 10 gallon is really a good tank to start out with for a planted tank as it's easier to do DIY CO2, easier to get higher wattage lighting for it (DIY again ) and cheaper when it comes to using the more expensive substrates . With a planted tank done right you can often increase the bioload if you stick with small sized fish.

In a ten, just stick to small peaceful fish under 2 inches (potential size) in length.
Some suggestions are:
Lemon Tetras
Glowlight Tetras
Cardinal Tetras
Neon Tetras
Head & Tail light tetras
Pristella tetras
guppies (live bearers)
Platies (live bearers)
Some of the smaller barbs such as cherry barbs
Harlequin rasboras are nice little fish that would work in a ten gallon.
A single species tank looks best as these need to be kept in a school of at least six.
If the fish you pick are small, you could have six and one dwarf gourmari (they are not schooling and do will alone) or you could add a betta.
Cories need to be in groups of at least six and a ten gallon is too small. Also, avoid common plecos as they get huge, but something like a rubbernose or smaller pleco would be OK if you choose to have a bottom dweller (only one per tank). You could add a few snails, but some species will eat your plants (your LFS can tell you which ones are not plant eaters). Ghost shrimp are another option.
Danios and white clouds stay small, but are very active for a ten gallon - really do better in a twenty or larger.
I am sure there are others, but I only listed the ones I know about.

In my 10g I have 6 neons, 1 male Betta (Jack), and 2 ottos. I am going to get 4 more neons this weekend. My tank is planted. My two ottos seem very happy. They have lots of green algae to eat. I may get another otto this weekend too. They seem fine just the two of them though.
My neons are quite shy, the reason I am getting more. I hope with a bigger school they will come out more often. My Betta seems to be doing good. I have not seen any aggression.
You could easily get a Dwarf Gourami instead or a Betta. And cardinals or other small tetras instead of neons. This was my first tank and made me want to plant the 55 I just set up.

Here is a pic of the whole tank:

Here is a pic of a couple neons. They like to hide and are a little shy.

Here are the two ottos...doing their job.

My 11g has Cardinal Tetras, Ottos, & one M Betta.
It is full of live plants and getting more. Look at My Profile and the Photo Bucket links for more info.

I also have the same problem with the Cardnals they seem very shy and I intend to get more.

Definetely put more Cardinals - up to a dozen. They're much happier & healthier in a bigger school

I agree...go with 10-12 cardinals and a male betta. If I could have found cardinals before I would have gotten them. I just recently found them at a LFS I had never been to. :%)

I personally would go with neons because around here they are MUCH cheaper than cardinals. The cardinals here are abour $4 per fish and the neons are like 99 cents per fish. I have had better luck with neons than cardinals too. You could do several different things.

6-8 Neons and a Male betta, 2 ottos*
6-7 Female Bettas, 2 Ottos*
8-10 Male Guppies, 2 Ottos*
10-12 Neons, 2 Ottos*
6 Von Rio Tetras, 2 ottos*

*2 ottos and one SMALL pleco can be interchanged. Scribble Plecos only get to be 2.8 inches so they are a great small pleco.

There are probably many many other ideas but these are the ideas I woudl consider. A lot of people likt rummynose tetras, I am not sure if they would work in your tank. They might get too big; however, I do not like rummynose tetras so I don't know much abotu them.

I would not put 6-7 female bettas in a 10g. Although they are not as aggressive as males, they tend to be a little if packed in a small tank.
3-4 would be better. I hope someone else can also say more. I have never heard of 7 female bettas in a tank together.
