I was thinking of putting in 2 dwarf gouramis and a small schooling species. Would this work and if so, what schooler should i put in?

I'm thinking a ten gallon would be too small for one dwarf gourami, let alone two. I know my sister wants a gourami for her 15 gallon and was told that the dwarfs might not be a good idea.

How about sparkling/pygmy gouramis? They're sweet little things, and smaller than the dwarfs. You could have a nice little school of them, thus having your gourami and your school all together.

I personally have a male betta and six female guppies (mother and some of her female progeny) in a ten gallon. I wouldn't put anymore than that in there... I've had more guppies in there before I gave them away, and I'm glad I did... the young girls were starting to stunt because of the overcrowding.

while it's true that a ten gallon is a pretty small enclosure and that you can't really fit a whole lot in a ten gallon... i personally think a pair of dwarf gourami's and a few small tetras would be fine. just as long as you keep up with water changes and all that other good stuff, you should be good.

Mwee... yeah, I just did some research and they give varying tank sizes for dwarf gouramis. So fudge the 20 gallon suggestion and go for it. As long as your fishies are happy, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

My sis will be happy to know that she can keep her favorite fishie.

I wouldn't go slap happy with fish besides the gouramis, though. A small school of small fish (neons or similar) might work, but don't go overboard... You don't want to get into overcrowding issues.

Good luck with your gourami. *makes plans to get her sister a fishy surprise for a 'welcome back from school' present *

I usually keep one dwarf gourami with my guppies in a ten. He keeps the population from exploding, and the ones he doesn't get are usually the more healthy ones.

Just make sure you have a male and female. I had two male dwarf gouramis in a 10g and one picked on the other until he was almost dead. The only tank I had to move him to was a 5g and he died like a week later. I think if I had a bigger tank, he might have made it. If you can't find a female, just make sure you have a tank ready in case they fight.

10Gal. is too small for a pair of Dwarf Gourami & a school of Tetras or Harlequins.

Yeah, two of them is just too much for a 10 gallon, especially since females are very rarely available (because they are drably colored). You could, however, have one dwarf gourami and a school of six to eight small tetras.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I have to agree that a pair of dwarf gourami would be pushing the limits of a 10 gallon too far. But with just a single male, you should be able to add that school of smaller tetra's.

What about:
1 male dwarf gourami
6 harlequin rasboras or small tetras like cardinals or neons.
Or
1 male dwarf gourami
6 tiny corys like pygmaeus, habrosus or hastusus.
Or
4 sparkling gouramis
6 tiny corys or harlequins or small tetras.

Like either of these?
