I live now about 15 minutes away from campus (yet still live on campus...i know i know no lectures about that please lol).

Anyway I would like to set up my 29 gallon when i get to college but don't know what to do about it over breaks specifcally the winter month off. How difficult would it be to transfer everything home over break?

I could possibly set up a sepeate 29 gallon at home and have it cycling a week or so before i get home, then bring the fish home to it, but how hard would it be on the fish? But then i would have to purchase another filter and everything.

Hope some of that made sense and i'de appreciate any opinions...i would love to have the larger tank at school with me.

I would not do the whole think with having a tank at your house, this would take a lot of time and effort and be really stressful on your fish. Could you maybe find a friend who is staying at college over break to watch the fish? I know some colleges make everyone leave over break so in your case an automatic feeder and a light timer might be your best bet. What kind of fish were you planning on keeping? What college do you go to? Most colleges do not allow more than 10 gallons, you are so lucky!

thanks for the responce!

I'm thinking about getting tetras and whatever will fit around a school or so of them. Maybe I should check with my college regulations on tank size, i kinda didn't think of that. The reason I didn't is because a friend of mine had a 55 gallon last year for a short while, because he purchased it toward the end of the school year.

The more I think about this the more it doesn't sound like a good idea but it's sad because I won't be able to have my 29 gallon

I suppose then that i'll have to get another 10 or 15 gallon tank then if i want to satisfy my urges for a tropical tank other than my beta tank. Which I am very glad to be realizing now instead of at a later date after i make the filter and heater purchases.

But even then, same situation...how do i get the fish home/what to do about breaks? Lower water level and be careful transfering entire tank or what?

At my school I don't think that they have a size limit on fish tanks. You just can't have anything that has fur or something like that.

I had a 20 gal. in the dorms and my RA's thought it was cool.

When I went home for Christmas break I took my tank home with me. I drained about 3.5-4 gal. of water into a 5 gal bucket and put the fish in that for transporting. The tank I would drain to about 1/4 to 1/3 water and take it home like that. This way you are not doing a fresh set up. You have it easy being only 15 minute away from scool. I was about 2 hours. Good luck!

yeah maybe i should keep my ten gallon beta tank and go with a twenty so i can stock it a little heavier for the tetra. Now i need to invest in a new hood though.

I'll be going to college next year and doing something similar (I also live about 15 minutes from school, lol). However, my college puts a cap at 20 gallons; however, the dorm rooms aren't very big anyway so having a tank much bigger than that and I'd have to sleep in the tank stand. Might be something to keep in mind.

I'm actually doing a paludarium so my tank won't even be filled up all the way, which helps ease building it up and tearing it down. As another example, if you want live plants, consider having them in the little pots or attached to rocks or wood so that they don't have to be difficultly replanted, or just get floating plants! Well, at least I've always had trouble with trying to repeatedly replant some things that haven't taken root yet; it can be annoying! Think about some of the things that you could do just a little differently to help speed up matters, perhaps even to considering only keeping those kinds of fish that are a lot easier to catch.:%)

Does it really need to be deleted? I'd prefer to leave it up so others can refer to it. You never know, it might help someone else.
