What should I go for in my new 30 gallon? I was thinking about tang. chichlids but they're very $$$ around here. My other choice is a community, but most fish are too big for that size tank (angelfish, plecos, some gouramis).
Does anyone have other suggestions?

I agree with OldTimer aswell. Rams & Corydoras are a great mix.

What do you think I should use for decorations. I am thinking about a prehistoric look. I found some fossils upstate that I can't sell, don't have enough room for on the shelves, and don't want to throw out. I was thinking of putting them in my tank as a prehistoric look. I could line the bottom with fine gravel and the fossils. I'd have one big fossil run along the length of the tank. I could put plants between the gaps. It would look just like a jurrasic jungle, only underwater. Then, I'd use some of manburg's hanging gardens in the background (love that idea man!).

Do you think, with lots of plants and good water changes, I could make the schools larger over time? Say I have perfect water quality for several months, could I raise the school a fish or two every so often?

I'll start with:
2 rams
school emerald tetras
school hatchets
school cories

Can't wait to see how this turns out. Hopefully the fossels work out and don't pollute the water, because the grass/plants coming in through the cracks would be quiet a sight. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

I personally wouldn't put fossils in an aquarium... A good number of fossils are calcium carbonate (limestone) based. Even if they're sandstone fossils I would avoid them. Although, then again, I don't work with fossils so I guess I can't call myself an expert, but my opinion would be to avoid putting them in regardless...

Besides, fossils are cool, I'd be worried about them dissolving...:%)

I'll add the fossils first, before I start cycling or anything. If they don't effect the water within a week or 2, I'll keep them, otherwise, no.

They're poor quality so, I don't care about algae or dissolving or anything. I didn't pay a cent for them, I found them myself, and my other choice was the leave them in the old house.

What are some other fish you would suggest for a 30 gallon (seperate tank)? I like the community idea, and Little Mousling helped me put together an idea for a tanginakian tank. But I was wondering if those are my only two choices.
