My hubby managed to find me a 5 inch pair of black convicts - male and female, not paired up yet, and not breeding, but he is bringing them home. I currently have the following in my 35 gallon tank:

1 pair of breeding Jewels
1 pair of 2 inch paired up Convicts (not breeding yet)
3 juvenile salvinis

I want to know what fish to retain, wat to give away?

I do want to keep the new pair of convicts for sure, so please advise.

Well they are all compatible but also very aggressive. They would need a much larger tank than that to coexist somewhat peacefully in there. Probably 55 gallons or up if you returned 2 of the salvinis. Also, since you have a pair of convicts and a pair of jewels, both pairs will become much more aggressive when breeding and the convicts will most likely kill the jewels. The salvinis will probably get too big for the tank anyways.

Salvini are, IME, fairly nice fish. Jewels are the only fish small enough to be bred in a 35. You MIGHT be able to hold the convicts (as opposed to the jewels, though I have seen convicts that were EASILY 9" ), as they are a young pair.

hang on... so you currently have a pair of convicts in there and you want to add another pair?

once the convicts start breeding they will become way to aggressive for the other fish and will most probably kill them.

1 pair of cons will easily overstock you in no time

I will relocate the smaller pair of convicts. I am also getting a free 55+ gallon tank in 2 weeks. I am going to return 1 or more salvinis.

What are my options now?
