Looking for stocking suggestions for my son's 39 gallon eclipse show tank. He currently has:

7 zebra danios
4 julii corys
2 dwarf gouramis

The danios were used to cycle, but Unfortunately not much research was done regarding my son's other fish choices above, so future stocking suggestions and/or warnings about his current fish scheme would be greatly appreciated.

Wish I had found this site a bit earlier...

actually, your stocking is quite fine.
The only concern is that corys appreciate being in larger groups than that, so you could up the number from anything from 6- 12 in that size tank, as those are relatively a medium size cory.
You could also add another group of schooling fish if you wanted, such as harlequin rasbora, glowlight tetra, neons, white cloud minnows, rummynose tetra etc etc.
Or you could add a larger centerpeice fish like an Angelfish.

taoskibum,

Welcome to FP

Do you think you could return the Danios? I used mine to cycle the tank as well and after a while they got pretty boring and annoying. The constant chasing drives the other smaller fish insane, in particular my newly acquired Otos seem to get bugged by them because the Danios think they are danios as well (remotely similar markings and body structure). If you like your Danios though, no problem with holding on to them either.

How long is the tank set up already? Don’t add any other fish too early.
Do you have a test kit to get ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate values?
Do you have any real plants in the tank?

So_Very_Sneaky gave you good advice on what kind of fish you could add. How old is your son? Don’t let him convince you that “bigger is better” .

my son is 3, and absolutely addicted to fish and aquariums. I decided to get an aquarium as a responsibility project for him, as well as to feed his thirst for knowledge of anything about fish. He is really hooked on the danios (including names for all 7), so I am kinda stuck with what I have. I was shooting for a stocking scheme of numerous small fish that are easily replaceable without him noticing much, so a fishkeeping mistake on my part would not be too traumatic.

we have had the tank for 2 months, and my son and I have made a routine out of weekly 10% water changes, and testing for ammonia, as well as nitrate and nitrite.

I would add more Corydoras of the same type as you already have & a school of Tetras.
