I am thinking about up grading my 20 gallon long to a 55 gallon tank. Does anyone have any idea about how much the tank and a basic stand will cost.

20 Gallon Long:
Aquaclear 300
2 Bolivian Rams, Mikrogeophagus altispinosus: Gumby and Pokey

The tank & stand here at wal mart are $255

At the chain pet stores anywhere from 300 - 900$$$

I myself have bought alot of Wal-Mart tanks, and never to have one never fail yet.

Plus this does not include rocks and decos.

Look into the DIY section if that is a bit to much see if you can make some things yourself.

Hope this helps!

The decorations will come from the 20 gallon. They will stay there for a couple weeks/months untill my sister gets the 20 gallon. By that time I think i'll have money for new stuff and more fish.

Is that $255 in US of Canadian?

i know walmart sells tank stand as well...the price here if i recall is around 100 cad by mylex.

For stocking maybe
2 Dwarf Gouramis*
6 Glowlight Tetras*
6 Harlequin Tetras*
6 Albino Corydoras*(aeneus?)
3 Otto Catfish*
6 Black Neon Tetras
6 Rummy Nose Tetras
* Means I already have them in the 20 gallon
More (small school fish) will go in when I think of them. Suggestions?

I want to buy the filter, heater, etc. seperatly so I can get the bigger size of the types I found to work in the 20 gallon.(why mess with what already works?)
And I like to buy the filter a size above the recomended size.
That way I don't have to worry about over stocking as much.

Check Ebay and Aquabid for tanks close to your area. Best deals are found there. I scored a 125g with stand(nice) and all kinds of extra goodies for $350US. Just be patient and you will find a good tank at a great price. Furthest I drove to pick up a Ebay tank was 60 miles(I've purchased several) .Good luck.

A 55 gallon setup at Wal-Mart is $150. The matching stand is around $80. Even if you dont use the filter and equipment that comes with it, they serve as a good back up.

Also check LFS's. A place by me sells 60 gallon tanks with lights and a stand for 170. When searching online, try checking craigslist.org . Quite often you'll find people moving who don't want to deal with moving their tanks and will let them go for cheap (fish included somtime)

I didn't think walmart tanks were that good of quality. The stands actually aren't bad but I got my tank from the lfs instead for $50. It was twice as heavy to carry as the walmart 55g kit and didn't have a cracked brace. If you do buy a tank from walmart open the box in the store and check the centerbrace. We returned 2 and finally went somewhere else because both had cracked or broken braces and one had a crack down the glass.

If you have a Petland near you - an ALL-Glass 55 gal aquarium and a black wrought iron stand sell for $89.99 US. You can use some of what you have now. For the lighting , filters, etc- try one of the discount online stores- they usually cost 40% less than an LFS.
