Guppies are too messy, small tanks are harder to keep stabilized. The otos will not survive through cycling nor will they do well with fluctuating water conditions. I'd recommend white cloud mountain minnows, microrasboras, or yamato shrimp, just to name a few. "If you're afraid you'll make a mistake, you won't make anything." -Family Circus |

I am assure you know the smaller the tank the more difficult is it to maintain. Who is actually going to look after the tank you or your young brother? I would do a lot of research before I put any thing in that small tank. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. I would put ottos in there at all. They are sensitive and like friends. 5g are hard to keep stable. With a male betta you can do 50-100% water changes and wait a little while in between them...even if you have a filter...so they are easy to maintain. A couple male guppies may be ok...but I would just go with the betta. |

A betta with some nice live plants, java fern, small crypts, anubias nana petite. Would look so lovely. Water changes weekly would be a must. Good luck with the new tank! If it is fluorescent, then yes he could have some low light plants. I suggest some java fern and java moss. And if you can find it, Anubias nana petite. I think a nice planted betta home would be great. Be careful with the shrimp though...some bettas live happily with them and some eat them. Just keep an eye on them. |
