That is neo. brevis. All other species are either too big, or are colony fish. Technically, neo. multi. can also fit in a 5 gallon, but they live in colonies. You would only be able to have 3 multis. Therefore, you can not have multis for the same reason you can't have tetras or cories. Breeding pair of dwarf cichlids I can't think of any dwarf chichlids that could fit, let alone breed, in a 5 gallon. Besides many live in harems, not pairs. Can you name some species? Five dwarf Rasboras (several different species)Really? I thought schooling fish were taboo in 5 gallons? Waht species are you talking about? |

They are some of the most colorful and healthy shellies I've seen. "I can't think of any dwarf chichlids that could fit, let alone breed, in a 5 gallon. Besides many live in harems, not pairs. Can you name some species?" Uhhh... Most species can be bred in a five gallon. The majority of them don't get any larger than 5cm. The manager at my store (who is completely obsessed wwith cichlids) has bred about ten different species of Apistogramma in five gollons. It does work. "Really? I thought schooling fish were taboo in 5 gallons? Waht species are you talking about?" Five gallons is plenty of room for pretty much all the Microrasbora and Boraras species. And there are several of them available if you know where to look. Small schooling fish are absolutely fine in a five gallon. ![]() I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Keep in mind this applies for a duo of PRE PAIRED apistos, and then, only the smaller species (resticulosa complexes, borellii complexes, trifasciata complexes)/malbrutur/young pair. Again, these figures serve as the basis for a breeding tank only. For full time living, larger spaces are necessary. To display true apistogramma spawning behavior, one needs a harem of several females and a pair or trio of males. Hierarchic behavior is quite interesting amongst these fish and they tend to be happier with others of their own kind. Five gallon breeders are intended only for commercial use. If you intend on spawning the apistos for selling, and space is at a premium, then by all means go ahead. Otherwise, it is not recommended. Many rasborids can fit in a five gallon. Macs come to mind.
