I would go with some Mulits or a Betta.

Here are some ideas for you...

- One male betta
- One to three female bettas
- One or two pairs of cherry barbs
- Five Endler's Livebearer males
- Two male guppies
- Breeding pair of shellies
- Breeding pair of dwarf cichlids
- Five dwarf Rasboras (several different species)
- Three bumblebee gobies (brackish)
- One to three dwarf puffers
- Five African dwarf frogs

I'm sure I'll come up with more later...

Breeding pair of shellies

I just wanted to add that there is only one species of shellies that would be able to fit in a 5 gallon. That is neo. brevis. All other species are either too big, or are colony fish. Technically, neo. multi. can also fit in a 5 gallon, but they live in colonies. You would only be able to have 3 multis. Therefore, you can not have multis for the same reason you can't have tetras or cories.

Breeding pair of dwarf cichlids

I can't think of any dwarf chichlids that could fit, let alone breed, in a 5 gallon. Besides many live in harems, not pairs. Can you name some species?

Five dwarf Rasboras (several different species)
Really? I thought schooling fish were taboo in 5 gallons? Waht species are you talking about?

Neo. ocellatus works as well... At work we have a trio in a five gallon, and they breed every few weeks. They are some of the most colorful and healthy shellies I've seen.

Uhhh... Most species can be bred in a five gallon. The majority of them don't get any larger than 5cm. The manager at my store (who is completely obsessed wwith cichlids) has bred about ten different species of Apistogramma in five gollons. It does work.

Five gallons is plenty of room for pretty much all the Microrasbora and Boraras species. And there are several of them available if you know where to look.
Small schooling fish are absolutely fine in a five gallon.

Keep in mind this applies for a duo of PRE PAIRED apistos, and then, only the smaller species (resticulosa complexes, borellii complexes, trifasciata complexes)/malbrutur/young pair. Again, these figures serve as the basis for a breeding tank only. For full time living, larger spaces are necessary. To display true apistogramma spawning behavior, one needs a harem of several females and a pair or trio of males. Hierarchic behavior is quite interesting amongst these fish and they tend to be happier with others of their own kind. Five gallon breeders are intended only for commercial use. If you intend on spawning the apistos for selling, and space is at a premium, then by all means go ahead. Otherwise, it is not recommended.

Many rasborids can fit in a five gallon. Macs come to mind.
