I just had a burst of platy fry from a platy that came pregnant and granted me with 8 fry then died. And one of my otehr fish mysterously had 2 fry. (Not sure if it is a second generation though)

And I have ended up with 10 fry of which I can only keep about 3, and my friend might adopt 1 or 2. So I will be left with about 5.

Would 5 small platys be able to fit in about a 7 gallon (about 26 litres)?

Or would that be pushing it?

It would be with a good filter, maybe an eheim aquaball 2208 I think. And a heater of course, would a 55wtt be ok as that is what is on my quarantine tank is that is about a 7 gallon (26 litres).

It would also be heavily planted with weekly water changes, and of course it would be cycled!

Thanks!

I think you should be okay as long as you keep up with the maintenance on the tank.

Thanks for replying so quickly, I won't slack on the water changes. I think I will fishless cycle this tank as I did it with my 126 litre and it worked perfectly!

I still want more opinions though!

Sure, I don't slack off on water changes!

Would it be pushing it to add 2 otos? Would one be lonely?

I want more opinions would 5 platys and maybe 1 or 2 otos be ok, in a 7 gallon heavily planted, with an eheim aquaball internal 2208 filter, a 55wtt tronic heater, and weekly 25% water changes?

I agree with the resonses you've received so far. The only problem I see is if you end up with M/F platies; soon you'd be having lots of fry.

I would either get 2 otos or none, they definitely prefer the company of their own kind.

Would:
5 platys
2 otos

In a 7 gallon be ok?

I added the otos because the tank could be near a window so there might be a good supply of algae for the platys and otos to munch on.

Are otos very delicate?

Do they need soft water or can they live in water about 10dGH?

Will they be ok with platys?

The platys will be either all male or all female, I am putting the other gender in my other tank.

Thankyou so much for your help!

hmm..near the window...there might be draft (flactuating temp).

otos r indeed very delicate..requiring clean water and live plants, but they can tolerate 5-19 dH and they will be fine with ur young platies

Your stocking levels should be ok. I'd worry about the tank being near a window for the same reasons. You can grow oto treats by placing rocks in a container of water on a window ledge.

Many people find them to be delicate. [link=This]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Bottom%20Feeder%20Frenzy/48796.html" style="COLOR: #FFFF99[/link] is an excellent article about otos you might want to read.

I've kept them successfully by not adding them until the tank was cycled and running for a while; doing slow acclimation; and making sure algae is available in the tank before putting them in.

The tank will definitely be cycled way before they go in.
What is the problem with it being near a window?
