I have a spare cycled 7 gallon, with some fish I am returning to the aquarium, and I am not sure what to do with it. I know it is quite small but I was thinking of putting some fish that don't seem to fit anywhere else.

1 female betta
4 young male platys

Would this be overstocked. I will be doing regular water changes, it is planted and has an Eheim Pick-up filter on it.

What do you think?

Would the 4 young male platies be there permenantly? I had 2 male platies (young) in a 15 and they were almost too active for that.

I agree about the activity level of the platys in that sized tank.

You might e able to get away with a few female bettas especially if you have it heavily planted.

They will not be there permanently. They were in a 12 gallon for a while, and seemed perfectly fine in there. They are only just 1/2" at the moment. I only have 1 female betta, so I don't really want anymore in there. It is heavily planted. When they get bigger they can be moved somewhere else.

Are you looking to get new fish or stock with something you already have?

If you are thinking new, why not go with something a touch smaller that you can have a small school of... ie: glolite tetras.

If you are looking to stock it with what you already have, I agree that the platys might be a little active for a tank that size.. also, to go from a 12gl to a 7gl and then possibly back to something else later, might be a little shocking to them. (Not exactly sure having never done it personally).

I don't really want new stock. They have been temporarily for about a week in that tank before, and they were fine. If they get too active, I can see about moving them.

If you get platies, only get all females or all males. Once they start having fry if you mix both sexes, you will have a problem.

Sorry, your original post/question is a bit confusing to some of us I guess.

It sounds like the betta is staying no matter what and that the platies are temporary. If that's the case, you're currently not overstocked. But like others have said, once they get a bit larger it's probably a good idea to move them, because of both their size and activity level.

Thankyou, sorry about the original post. The betta is staying until it dies of old age! (forever) or until i am allowed another tank. The Platys are staying until I can bear to give them to the aquarium. (they are soo cute!)
